Bangladesh's Mehedi Hasan Miraz celebrates reaching his maiden Test hundred during day two of their first Test against the West Indies in Chittagong Thursday AFP

Miraz revealed how all three most senior batsmen of the side - Tamim, Shakib and Mushfiq - helped him get the success

Bangladesh all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz acknowledged his seniors for helping him achieve his maiden Test century.

The 103-run knock by the 23-year old Miraz, who batted at No 8, consolidated the hosts’ position after the end of the second day in their first Test against the West Indies at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Thursday.

Miraz, who has been regarded as a talented player since his early age, arrived in the Test scene in grand fashion as he grabbed 19 wickets in the two-match series against England, including a 12-wicket haul in the second match when Bangladeshbeat the illustrious side for the first time.

However, the former U-19 captain gradually focused more on his bowling after his stellar debut and his batting did not shine much in senior level as it was anticipated during his youth career.

Miraz revealed how all three most senior batsmen of the side - Tamim Iqbal, Shakib al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim - helped him get the success.

“Tamim bhai advised me to play the deliveries that come to the body as straight as possible instead of playing across. He also suggested me to leave the others that is not in the line of the stumps and I guess it helped me a lot during this course,” Miraz said during the virtual press-conference after the end of the day’s play.

“Mushfiq bhai told me about the wicket being pretty good for batting and encouraged me that making a big score here is very possible for me, like remaining unbeaten on 70,” said Miraz on Mushfiq.

Miraz put on the innings’ highest 67-run partnership with Shakib al Hasan, who made 68 in his Test return, and he also explained how the ace all-rounder helped him.

“Shakib bhai told me to play naturally, when he had seen me being nervous at the beginning. As I was trying too many things for quite a while, he reached to me and calmed my nerves, guided me over several shot selections, which helped me immensely. Like at one point, I was thinking of playing a slog sweep to release my pressure, and Shakib bhai suggested me to try paddle-sweep instead. I tried to follow it thinking chances of being dismissed while playing that shot is much less,” said a satisfied looking Miraz.

Miraz reached the triple figure, jumped with joy and gave a sizdah.

Ironically, the No 11 batsman Mustafizur Rahman, his life-long friend was on the other side of the crease.

Miraz and Mustafizur, who hail from Khulna and Satkhira respectively, two neighboring southern districts of the country, have been friends since early age and always remained best of buddies.

“Mustafizur was very nervous as he wasn’t sure if he would be able to give me appropriate support. He knew how big a moment it was for me. I reached out to him and told him not to worry and I advised him to play naturally, and take little to no pressure. I believed in the almighty, and left it completely to my fate,” Miraz added.

Meanwhile, the Windies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, who finished the day not out on 49, looked solid and thinks the visitors have a good chance to fight if they remain disciplined in the following days of the match.

“Enjoyed it thus far,” said Brathwaite.

“Still have a long way to go. So, I am looking forward to the challenge. We have to continue batting well, keeping backing ourselves and our plans.

“I think it is still a good batting pitch, so (Friday) is a very important day for us. We really have to build some partnerships to get runs on the board. We have to get as close to their score as possible or even go pass it. And then obviously from there, second innings would be crucial.”

The West Indies will resume on 75/2 on the third day replying to Bangladesh’s 430.
