Bangladesh will expect to take control on the third day by getting a good first innings lead but the hosts will have an anxious night as Shakib left the field after grimacing from groin pain 12 overs before the stumps.

Mehedi Hasan Miraz scored his maiden Test century to put Bangladesh at a vantage point at the end of the second day of their first Test match against the West Indies at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in the port city Thursday.

Miraz, who became the 22nd Bangladeshi to score a Test ton, made 103 as Bangladesh were all-out for 430 before the visitors ended the day on 75/2, trailing by 355 runs.

Miraz became the fourth batsman in the country’s history to score a century batting at eight after Khaled Mashud, Sohag Gazi and Mahmudullah.

It was the 60th century for Bangladesh in Tests.

To his credit, Miraz added 65 with the Nos nine, ten and 11 to gather his first ever first-class century.

Miraz arrived at the wicket quite early in the day as overnight batsman Liton Das could add only four more runs before being dismissed for 38.

Shakib al Hasan, the other not out batsman, who resumed on 42, got past fifty, his 25th in Tests, and navigated the side beyond 300.

But the ace all-rounder, who marked his Test return, departed for 68 after adding 67 with Miraz, leaving the side on 315/7.

Bangladesh were targeting 350 at that stage but Miraz continued batting confidently, playing some eye catching shots against both spinners and pacers, and got resolute support from tail-enders that took the score well past the 400-run mark.

Miraz, who was dropped twice, garnered 65 runs from the last three partnerships and added 44, 57, and 14 for the last three wickets with Taijul Islam (18), Nayeem Hasan (24) and Mustafizur Rahman (three not out).

Miraz knows how to take five-wicket hauls, now he has a Test ton too, the fifth Bangladeshi to do so AFP

Miraz said his fellow batsmen did well on the slow pitch to accumulate the runs and thinks he got the aid of luck as well to reach the treasured milestone.

“The wicket was not very fast. Our batsmen did well considering the nature of the wicket. Many of them got out unluckily while playing shots. I played shots and luckily got away. This is what happens in cricket,” said Miraz during the virtual press-conference after the end of the day’s play.

Jomel Warrican, who had three wickets in the first day, added another scalp to return with 4/133, while off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall got two wickets.

During the West Indies’ reply, Mustafizur Rahman, the only paceman in hosts’ XI, looked sharp and intimidated the batsmen, especially the left-handers.

He got rid of John Campbell (three) in the fifth over of the innings by trapping him in front after a successful Bangladesh review overturned field umpire Saifullah Ibn Shahid Saikot’s initial decision of not out.

Taijul Islam offered lower-order resistance AFP

The left-arm pacer, who is playing a Test after almost two years, gave debutant Shayne Mosely a very tough time and after as many as three reviews were overturned, the struggling southpaw was ultimately dismissed for just two of 23 balls.

Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite, who batted wearing a pair of sunglasses, and Nkrumah Bonner, however looked solid and they saw off the remainder of the day adding 51 runs.

Brathwaite was just one short of 50 while Bonner was on 17.

Bangladesh will expect to take control on the third day by getting a good first innings lead but the hosts will have an anxious night as Shakib left the field after grimacing from groin pain 12 overs before the stumps.

The team management informed that Shakib, who sustained the injury during the third and final ODI against the Windies, will be observed by physicians and will take a decision today morning about his availability on a day that may be the most crucial one in the game.
