As many as eight batsmen got past 20 but only one of them could reach the century mark, once again portrayed the perennial problem of Bangladeshi batsmen lacking the quality of building big innings even in most favorable conditions.

Bangladesh scored 430 runs in the first innings of their first Test against the West Indies at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, but most of the batsmen failed to convert good starts into big innings.

As many as eight batsmen got past 20 but only one of them could reach the century mark, once again portrayed the perennial problem of Bangladeshi batsmen lacking the quality of building big innings even in most favorable conditions.

On the docile pitch, West Indian pace duo Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel toiled hard without getting bounce or pace from the surface, while the spinners could not ask many stiff questions.

Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who came in at No 8, was the only Bangladeshi to reach triple figure, and comfortable batting of the lower-order batsmen proved that the condition was extremely easy, but the top-order batters failed to utilize it properly.

Sarwar Imran, one of the most revered coaches of the country, pointed out that scoring big innings is a matter of practice and habit, traits which are built by playing long-format cricket regularly in the domestic arena.

“Bangladesh top-order batsmen got starts but failed to convert them into big innings in very favorable conditions. Playing big innings is a matter of habit but most Bangladeshi players play very few longer-format games. So they cannot grow the habit,” said Imran to Dhaka Tribune.

The experienced coach believes the only way to achieve permanent success in the most elite format of cricket is by nurturing young talents through the domestic cricket structure.

Bangladesh fielded four specialist spinners, including Miraz and all-rounder Shakib al Hasan, and it left them with no other option but to accommodate only one pacer.

When asked whether promoting Miraz as the second all-rounder was a good idea, the veteran coach said it is too early to jump to conclusions.

“Miraz did a good job with the bat, his batting against spin bowling was good and he applied himself well, but he needs to improve his skill against quality pace bowlers in more challenging conditions,” said Imran.

Bangladesh may yet win another Test match against a weak West Indies side in favorable conditions, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement ahead of greater challenges in the future.
