The defeat saw the Bangladesh dressing room, particularly Mominul and Domingo, face huge criticism, but the BCB boss came to their defence

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan said Bangladesh’s defeat in the first Test of the two-match series against visitors West Indies is not enough to draw a conclusion on the performance of national team head coach Russell Domingo and captain Mominul Haque.

Hosts Bangladesh were humbled by touring Windies in the Chittagong Test after the visiting side bounced back on the fifth and final day of the game to register a three-wicket victory.

The West Indies were driven to the historic win by debutant Kyle Mayers, who on debut remained 210 not out in the second innings to help chase down the 395-run target.

The occasion was only the second time a batsman struck a match-winning fourth-innings double-century.

The defeat saw the Bangladesh dressing room, particularly Mominul and Domingo, face huge criticism, but the BCB boss came to their defence.

Bangladesh in the crucial tie will miss out on key all-rounder Shakib al Hasan and opener Shadman Islam to injuries. The duo picked injuries in the previous game and has put the selection panel in a fix

“It is not right to discuss such things during a series. And then there is no reason for us to reach a conclusion based on a result of just one game. We should not forget that we have whitewashed this West Indies in ODI series just a few weeks back. So they can of course win a Test match. For us it now important that we play the second Test well,” said Nazmul to the media in the sidelines of the opening ceremony of Mayor Cup Football at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Wednesday.

Bangladesh will look for a revival through victory in the second and final Test, set to begin at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the capital Thursday.

“I have a zoom meeting with the team (Wednesday) evening. I will speak to them. I already spoke to the senior members of the team, which is a regular thing for me. There is nothing to be demotivated about. First thing is, the West Indies played very well. There is no way to deny that. It is an impossible task to score a double hundred on day five, players from even the best of teams are not able to do that,” said Nazmul.

“But at the same time, we also need to admit that we missed and wasted chances. You cannot win a game if that happens,” he added.
