Soumya Sarkar scored his second fifty in two matches for Gazi Group Cricketers but his effort went in vain as Mushfiqur Rahim and Mosaddek Hossain scored fifties to help Abahani returned to winning track in Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League on Tuesday at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Meanwhile at BKSP Savar, Prime Bank Cricket Club beat Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and Brothers Union won against Partex Sporting Club in their respective matches.
Abahani v Gazi
Chasing 151 in 20 overs, Abahani found Mushfiqur and Mosaddek pulled up an unbeaten 105 runs stand for the fourth wicket to take the side to victory losing three wickets and two overs to spare. In form batsman Mushfiqur scored a 35-ball 53 laced with four boundaries and one over boundary while from the other end of the crease Mosaddek added unbeaten 50 off 28 deliveries powered with four boundaries and three over boundaries. The effort stabled the shaky start for Abahani as they lost opener Mohammad Naim on 10 followed by one-down Najmul Hossain Shanto on five.
Earlier, Gazi Group despite a middle and late middle order failure, posted 150-8 on the board riding on Soumya Sarkar’s 50-ball 67. The left-handed batsman struck six boundaries and one over boundary in his innings. He formed a 78-run stand opening stand off 54 balls with Mahedi Hasan, who made 43 off 32, but the others failed to use the foundation properly that saw Gazi falling short of putting a big enough total on the board.
Shohidul Islam and Aminul Islam bagged two wickets each for Abahani.
Prime Bank v Sheikh Jamal
Opener Rony Talukder powered Prime Bank to a seven-wicket win over Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi and move to the second spot of the league table. Prime Bank have earned four wins in five matches so far.
Sheikh Jamal opted to bat first in the game at BKSP Ground 4 and missed out of partnership in the innings. Fall of wickets in short intervals saw the side struggle to 133 for nine with middle-order batsman Sohrawardi Shuvo scoring 34 off 30, the most in the Sheikh Jamal innings. Prime Bank pacers Rubel Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman picked up two wickets each.
In reply, right-handed batsman Rony boosted the chase with his 48 off 34 deliveries that consisted of four boundaries and two over boundaries. Wicket-keeper batsman Anamul Haque finally got to see some runs in the ongoing tournament scoring a 33-ball 35 for the cause and that proved crucial in the low scoring game.
Salauddin Shakil bagged two wickets for Sheikh Jamal.
Brothers Union v Partex Sporting Club
All-rounder effort form Rahatul Ferdous helped Brothers Union get their third win of the competition defeating Partex by 33 runs.
Chasing 148, a youthful Partex side could get only 114 before getting all-out with a ball to spare in the innings. Ferdous picked four wickets conceding 34 runs in four overs while Saqlain Sajib and Sujon Hawlader bagged two wickets each. Wicket-keeper batsman Dhiman Ghosh’s 37-ball 44 was the only notable contribution in Partex innings.
Earlier, Brothers chose to bat first winning the toss and had Ferdous lead with the bat with a 44-ball 54 laced with three boundaries and two over boundaries before getting run-out in the second last ball of the innings. Ferdous’ effort pulled Brothers off from a precarious position of 57-6. Naeem Islam Junior, the only other player to score double-digit amassed 34 off 21 and more formed 78-run seventh wicket stand with Rahatul.
Shahadat Hossain, Tasamul Haque and Jaynul Islam picked two wickets apiece for Prime.
