Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque played numb when it came to comment on all-rounder Mahmudullah’s retirement. Visiting Bangladesh team secured a 220-run victory over Zimbabwe on Sunday and following the game it was expected for Mahmdullah to speak to the media on retiring from the longest version of the game.

The 35-year-old cricketer at the start of the final day of the Test at Harare Sports Ground was given guard of honor by the team mates. Mahmudullah, who finished as the Man of the Match for his unbeaten 150 runs in the game, was not questioned on his retirement during the presentation ceremony. And as it happened the cricketer chose not to speak to the media also.

Left-handed batsman Mominul chose to pass by the questions on Mahmudullah’s retirement during the post match media interaction.

“It is his personal decision [to retire]. One can always make his own decision. I cannot comment much on it,” said Mominul.

When quarried about the team giving guard of honor to Mahmudullah, Moninul said, “We tried to finish the game [looking for a win as it is the last game from Mahmudullah]. We wanted to dedicate the game to him thinking it is his last game. We were told he had started his Test career with a win so wanted it to finish with a win. We played as it was his last game.”

Mahmudullah had put the cricket fraternity of the country in shock after his decision to quit from the format was revealed in the media on Friday, following day three’s play at Harare. He had made the announcement during a team meeting as the sources revealed.

Dhaka Tribune spoke to many members inside the team and majority were left surprised. Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan in a prompt reaction also cited the decision from Mahmudullah as a surprising and claimed that the cricketer had travelled to Zimbabwe having ensured he has intention to play all three formats of the game.

There is wide rumor that Mahmudullah’s decision was driven by emotion for having been overlooked in the format by the selection panel. Mahmudullah while making the revelation of his retirement in the dressing room mentioned that he wanted to show that he ‘is fit to play Test cricket’ and that has been done through the 150 runs he has scored in the game.

There are also rumors that Mahmudullah has not been in good terms with national head coach Russell Domingo. The former South Africa cricketer is believed to have sidelined Mahmudullah from Test cricket and that the coach had also advised the cricketer to concentrate on white ball cricket only.

Mominul in the post day press interaction was quarried of the reaction the dressing room had following Mahmudullah’s announcement. The Bangladesh captain however could put enough words only to dodge the question from the media.

“Like I said already, it is tough to comment on the matter. I am supposed to feel sad as a young captain of the team. It will be abnormal if I do not feel sad about it,” said Mominul.
