Mushfiq due to personal reasons could not maintain the quarantine protocol set by CA and thus cannot be part of the series

Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim will not be able to play for Bangladesh in the upcoming T20I home series against Australia.

Middle-order batsman Mushfiq due to personal reasons could not maintain the quarantine protocol set by Cricket Australia and thus cannot be part of the series.

Among many Covid-19 protocols for the series, CA and Bangladesh Cricket Board had both agreed to 10-day quarantine for the teams and officials in bio-secure bubble ahead of the series.

Due to a family emergency Mushfiq returned home from Zimbabwe on July 14 and was unable to meet the quarantine requirements in reporting to the bio-secured hotel in Dhaka Monday.

Officials involved in the series and based in Dhaka had checked-in the hotel bio-bubble on the same day.

BCB cricket operations committee chairman Akram Khan informed that the board tried to negotiate for Mushfiq but CA did not agree to bend the protocol rules.

“We wanted Mushfiq to be part of the series. Even he wanted to play as his parents have now recovered a bit from Covid-19. But CA is not ready to compromise with quarantine protocol for which Bangladesh will have to play without Mushfiq,” said Akram to the media.

Bangladesh cricket team will also be missing regular opener Tamim Iqbal in the series.

The experienced left-handed batsman has been put in a long rest to recover from a knee injury picked up during the tour Sri Lanka in April this year.

Australia cricket team are scheduled to reach Dhaka Thursday amid a two-week long strict lockdown which started in the country Friday.

Both BCB and CA agreed in going ahead with the series, which will help the two teams prepare for the upcoming World T20I later this year.

The five T20Is will be played between August 3 and 9 at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium behind closed doors.

Bangladesh cricket team, currently on tour of Zimbabwe, will return Thursday and the members of the T20I squad will directly report to the team hotel.
