The squads for the past world events have always been of 15-member, but considering the Covid-19 pandemic situation, BCB director Jalal believes the teams should have been allowed to have bigger squads with back-up players

Bangladesh Cricket Board thinks the International Cricket Council should have considered the teams having bigger squads in the upcoming World T20I.

The squads for the past world events have always been of 15-member, but considering the Covid-19 pandemic situation, BCB director Jalal Younus believes the teams should have been allowed to have bigger squads with back-up players.

The participating teams for the World T20I, scheduled to take place in Oman and the United Arab Emirates from October 17 to November 14, will be allowed to carry 15 players and eight team officials, including the coaches and support staff.

The ICC has set September 10 as the deadline for the participating nations to submit their final list of 15 players and eight officials.

The teams willing to carry players above the 15 will have to pay from their own pockets.

“Of course I think the squad size is small considering the pandemic. They [ICC] should have allowed the teams to take back-up players,” said Jalal to the media Sunday.

“The respective boards have to pay expenses for any extra players it wants to carry. We will have to do the same. It would have been better if we were allowed to have bigger squads,” he added.

Bangladesh in the world event will first have to play the qualifiers.

Bangladesh in the first phase of the competition have been slotted in Group B and will contest with Oman, Papua New Guinea and Scotland.

In Group A, Ireland, Netherlands, Namibia and Sri Lanka will do battle.

The groups were selected on the basis of team rankings as of March 20, 2021.
