Mahmudullah said the squad has been prepared following discussion with head coach Domingo and the national selection panel

The Bangladesh squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup is almost ready, informed captain Mahmudullah.

The all-rounder during a media conference Tuesday said the squad has been prepared following discussion with head coach Russell Domingo and the national selection panel.

The Bangladesh captain is however, not being able to speak on it before official declaration.

The participating teams in the T20 World Cup, to be jointly hosted by the United Arab Emirates and Oman in October-November this year, have to submit a 15-member squad and the list of eight coaching staffs by September 10.

Mahmudullah emphasized that declaring the squad ahead of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand would have kept the players pressure less, a sentiment echoed by Domingo.

Bangladesh are set to take on visitors New Zealand in the first game at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Wednesday.

“We are almost set [with the T20 World Cup squad]. I spoke to the coach. I hope the selectors will declare the squad soon. I think it would have been better if we had declared the squad ahead of the series [against New Zealand]. The players could have been relaxed then. But this is something not in our control. Our job is to play cricket and should focus on the job we got to do on the field,” said Mahmudullah.

The squad for the New Zealand series involves 19 cricketers whereas the squad for the T20 World Cup has to be of 15 members.

There is no doubt that some players from the current squad will get omitted.

When asked if there will be any cricketer joining the squad for the T20 World Cup who is not part of the New Zealand series, Mahmudullah said, “I had a discussion with the coach [Domingo]. The selectors will have their inputs too. You all will soon get to know what is happening. The decision is already taken.”

Opener Tamim Iqbal is the only prominent cricketer not part of the New Zealand series due to a knee injury.

The left-handed batsman is undergoing rehab with the T20 World Cup in focus.
