The Taliban named a new government Tuesday, three weeks after sweeping to power when the Western-backed government collapsed in the wake of the withdrawal of US-led foreign forces

A Test match between Australia and Afghanistan in Hobart later this year is likely to be cancelled after the Taliban confirmed that they would ban women from taking part in any sport.

Federal Sports Minister Richard Colbeck has said Afghan athletes would be welcome to remain in Australia but not under the flag of the Taliban.

Senator Colbeck has now called on the International Cricket Council to take a stance against the Taliban, given their position on women playing sport.

Ahmadullah Wasiq, a spokesman for the Taliban's cultural commission, has said women playing cricket might expose their face and bodies.

The Taliban named a new government Tuesday, three weeks after sweeping to power when the Western-backed government collapsed in the wake of the withdrawal of US-led foreign forces.

When the Taliban last ruled Afghanistan two decades ago, girls were not allowed to attend school and women were banned from work and education.

The Afghan women's squad was then quietly disbanded amid safety concerns a few years after it was formed in 2010 but the Afghanistan Cricket Board revived the team last year and gave contracts to 25 players.

The ACB's popular program for girls has already been paused, but men's cricket has been allowed to continue as before.
