BJMC placed third with a single gold and two silvers and bronzes each

Three new national records out of a total of four were set on the second day of the Trust Bank Limited 15th National Summer Athletics Championship which concluded with Bangladesh Navy emerging as the champion at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Saturday.

Shirin Akter, who became the fastest women of the country for the eighth consecutive time after winning the 100m sprint Friday, was involved in two new national records, while young Navy athlete Mahfuzur Rahman set a new record in high jump.

Navy topped the medal tally with a total of 46 medals including 19 golds, 15 silvers and 12 bronzes while Bangladesh Army finished runners-up with 14 golds, 17 silvers and 10 bronzes.

BJMC placed third with a single gold and two silvers and bronzes each.

Shirin, also an athlete of Navy, won the gold in the women’s 200m sprint Saturday afternoon with an electronic timing of 24.97s and in the process broke the previous record of her teammate Shohagi Akter (25.06s) recorded during the last national athletics in January this year.

Shohagi took .22s more than Shirin in the latest race to finish second while Sharifa Khatun of Bangladesh Army closely followed her to be placed third with 25.25s.

Partnering with Shohagi, Tamanna and Disha, Shirin broke another 28-year record in the women’s 4*100m relay event having clocked 48.29s.

The previous record (48.51.73s) was held by Firuza, Rafeza, Nilufa and Sumita during the South Asian Federation Games 1991 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The 18-year old athlete Mahfuzur broke a nine-year old record in high jump as he jumped 2.15m high to break Sajib Hossain’s 2.11m feat set during the 2010 South Asian Games in Dhaka.

The 5.11-inch tall athlete also won gold in the last national athletics in January with 2m score.

“I’m very excited. I’ve participated in six national and summer athletics events before but never managed to set national record. After my three failed attempts to set a new record I started working harder to set the record,” said Mahfuzur, who hoped to win a medal in the upcoming SA Games by improving his height further.

Another Navy athlete Saiful Islam Khan Sunny clinched the gold in the men’s 200m sprint with a timing of 21.82s beating Shariful Islam (second) and Jahir Rayhan (third) in the process.

The gold winner in both 200m and 400m in 2017 couldn’t make it into the SA Games training camp after failing to perform well in the last national athletics due to injury.

The BKSP graduate hopes that his recent feat would bring him back to the ongoing camp.

Meanwhile, World U-18 Championship 2017 semi-finalist Jahir however, maintained his dominance in his favorite 400m sprint event where he clocked 48.12s to retain the gold.
