Grand Master Zia concedes defeat in National 'A' Chess

SM Sharon Monday beat Grand Master Ziaur Rahman in the 12th and penultimate round of the 43rd National "A" Chess Championship, sponsored by Omicon Group and organised by the Bangladesh Chess Federation. The tournament is being held at the chess federation hall-room at the second floor of the National Sports Council's old building. Sharon played with black pieces against Colle system of Zia. Zia made a blunder in his ninth move, giving Sharon the initiative before the latter completed the win following 39 moves. Reigning champion, GM Enamul Hossain and runners-up of the previous edition, GM Mollah Abdullah al Rakib are now joint top in the points table with 10 points each. Zia is second with eight points. Fide Masters Aminul Islam and Mohammad Fahad Rahman are joint third with 7.5 points each. In the 12th round, Enamul beat International Master Abu Sufian Shakil. Enamul played with white pieces and and won against Shakil in the 73rd move. Rakib beat Women's IM Shamima Akter Liza. Rakib played with black pieces and claimed victory after 84 moves. Aminul drew with Candidate Master Chanchal Kumer Ghosh. Aminul played with white pieces and drew after 19 moves. Fahad beat FM Syed Mahfuzur Rahman. Fahad played with white pieces and clinched victory in the 41st move. IM Mohammad Minhaz Uddin beat FM Sheikh Nasir Ahmed. Minhaz played with black pieces and was victorious after 83 moves. Mohammad Sharif Hossain beat FM Mehdi Hasan Parag. Sharif played with black pieces and sealed victory after 87 moves. The 13th and final round will be held Tuesday at the same venue.
