Shahzad suspended for two matches, Sabbir fined
Rangpur Riders’ Afghanistan cricketer Mohammad Shahzad has been suspended for two matches and fined 30 percent of his match fee after he poked Rajshahi Kings’ Sabbir Rahman with the bat during their Bangladesh Premier League 2016-17 season match in Mirpur last Monday. Sabbir was also fined 30 percent while Barisal Bulls' Al Amin Hossain was fined 50 percent of their BPL contracts after being found guilty of serious off-the-field disciplinary breaches by the BPL’s governing council. Sabbir was categorised under the “Grade A+” (Tk40 lakhs) cricketers while Al Amin was bracketed under the “A” (Tk25 lakhs) category. The players were also reminded of their responsibility as national cricketers and have been warned that any repeat of similar acts of indiscretion in the future will result in harsher penalty. Sabbir was found guilty of breaching the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s code of conduct after he got engaged in a verbal clash with Shahzad. Sabbir was fined 15 percent of his match fee while Rangpur’s stand-in captain Liam Dawson of England was also fined 30 percent of his match fee for showing dissent at an umpiring decision. Shahzad was found to have violated article 2.1.1 of the BCB’s code of conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”. The player was fined 30 percent of his match fee and suspended for an ensuing match of the tournament. In addition to the sanction imposed for his breach of article 2.2.1, four demerit points have been added to Shahzad’s disciplinary record. Pursuant to article 7.5 of the code, as Shahzad has reached four demerit points in the tournament, they have been converted into suspension points. Four demerit points equate to a ban from two matches. As per article 7.7 of the code, the suspensions shall run concurrently, not cumulatively, and as such, he is now banned from Rangpur’s next two BPL 4 matches. Meanwhile, Barisal's West Indies all-rounder Rayad Emrit has been warned for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during their match against Chittagong Vikings at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in the port city on November 22.
