Khulna turn on style to reach playoffs
Khulna Titans defeated table-toppers Dhaka Dynamites by six wickets in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Sunday to secure second spot in the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 2016-17 season's points table. In the process, Khulna sealed their place in the playoffs, alongside the already qualified Dhaka, third placed Chittagong Vikings and Rajshahi Kings, who pipped Rangpur Riders to fourth position. There will be a repeat of the Dhaka-Khulna clash in Qualifier 1 while Chittagong will take on Rajshahi in the Eliminator. Both the games will be held at the home of cricket in Mirpur tomorrow. Chasing Dhaka’s 158/7, Khulna lost their first wicket in the second over with the scoreboard reading nine; opening batsman Andre Fletcher (nine) cleaned up by Dhaka captain Shakib al Hasan. The other opener Hasanuzzaman though played a magnificent innings of 40 runs from just 19 deliveries. The right-hander smashed three boundaries and as many sixes during his knock. Dhaka rested all-rounders Dwayne Bravo and Andre Russell while in-form paceman Abu Jayed pulled a hamstring after bowling only one ball. The absence of these regular bowlers affected Dhaka’s attack as Khulna romped to victory with two overs to spare. Credit however, should also go to the Khulna batsmen who managed to keep their nerve and chase down the target convincingly. Skipper Mahmudullah yet again played a captain’s knock, scoring the highest 50 off 28 balls. He hit five fours and two sixes. All-rounder Ravi Bopara was the most successful Dhaka bowler with two wickets. Mahmudullah was adjudged player of the match. Earlier, Khulna captain Mahmudullah won the toss and elected to field first. The first wicket, that of Maruf, fell in the seventh over when the opener was caught short of the crease after making a run-a-ball 16. But Sangakkara, at the other end, continued to dominate the opposition bowlers, playing a superb innings of 59 runs off just 41 balls. Sangakkara was dropped by Ariful Haque when he was on two. The missed opportunity proved to be costly for Khulna as Sangakkara laid the foundation a good total. He smashed eight boundaries during his innings. Mosaddek Hossain was the second highest scorer for Dhaka with 20 runs. Khulna's left-arm paceman Junaid Khan picked up three wickets conceding 22 runs while Benny Howell and pacer Shafiul Islam bagged one each.
