Bangladesh Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim believes they will have a fair chance in the two-match Test series against host Sri Lanka, a side currently in transition.
Sri Lanka have been rebuilding for quite some time now with many of their experienced cricketers like Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara going into retirement. As the captain, Angelo Mathews was supposed to shepherd the inexperienced and young side, but the all-rounder was ruled out of the Bangladesh Tests due to a hamstring injury while a few key players are out of touch.
Mushfiq however, did not agree when asked if this would be the “best time” to take on the island nation.
But he did express hope of winning an away Test, and if possible, the series.
“It is a good opportunity for us, given that they (Sri Lanka) do not have many of their key players now. Regular captain Angelo Mathews is also out. But we should not forget that we are playing at their backyard. They will be under pressure as Bangladesh have been playing good cricket for quite some time now,” said Mushfiq on Sunday.
Mushfiq is fully aware of the fact that they are yet to be consistent in the longer version of the game. Out of the 98 matches played so far, the Tigers have won only eight, the latest coming against England at home in October last year.
He continued, “We are not at the stage where we can openly challenge a side in Test cricket. We are still inexperienced in this format. We can learn more when we create match-winning situations. We have to play well throughout the five days, and not only in the first three,” the wicketkeeper-batsman explained.
In their 45-day long tour, Bangladesh will have the advantage of having former Sri Lanka cricketers in the coaching staff – head coach Chandika Hathurusingha, batting coach Thilan Samaraweera and trainer Mario Villavarayan.
Mushfiq added, “We have been able to gather information from our coaching staff but it all depends on how we execute in the middle. We have got the ability but the job has to be done on the field. We have to think more about the job we need to do. We have the ability to win against Sri Lanka but will need out best performance to do that.”
