DPL Super Six stage begins Wednesday amid scorching heat
The Super Six stage of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPL) 2016-17 season gets underway on Wednesday across two venues as the top six teams after the first phase prepare to battle for the championship. Scorching summer heat however, is expected to make life difficult for the cricketers who are eager to perform at the highest level that is the Dhaka league, Bangladesh's premier List A competition. Former national captain Khaled Mashud, who is now coaching Prime Bank Cricket Club, has raised the issue of running the DPL under scorching heat on social media and urged the concerned authorities to change the schedule in coming years so that it can end within March-April. “The temperature is around 40 degrees and the cricketers are playing DPL under this heat. As a coach, I am concerned for the players out there as this competition is the best platform for many cricketers. Players are suffering amid this heat wave and often get injured during matchdays. It was not possible to delay the DPL but can we think about it next year? I would urge the BCB to finish the longer-version and one-day competitions by mid-April. They can think of a T20 tournament when the weather gets hotter. I believe such a step will help Bangladesh cricket,” said Mashud in his facebook post. Mashud also mentioned two incidents during the match between Gazi Group Cricketers and Prime. Firstly, Gazi batsman Jahurul Islam was batting on 66 when he got cramps. Unfortunately, he retired hurt and could not bat later. He did not field either. Secondly, Prime wicket-keeper Zakir Hasan faced an even serious problem. After fielding for 50 overs, he went out to bat. Batting on 66, he suddenly got cramps and his situation worsened in the dressing room. He was unable to recover even after two days. A lack of facilities in the three venues - Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah and the BKSP 3 and 4 grounds in Savar - are also creating problems for the participating teams. Power failure is a common phenomena, particularly at BKSP. There is no generator either in those places. During the match between Kalabagan Krira Chakra and Khelaghar Samaj Kalyan Samity, Kalabagan players encountered a difficult time as after fielding 50 overs amid this heat, they came to the dressing room only to find out that electricity was not available. They had to sit there without electricity for almost entirely the second innings and suffered a lot. When Kalabagan duo Mohammad Ashraful and Jashimuddin were batting at the middle, No 4 batsman Tushar Imran was padded up for more than an hour amid load-shedding. The Dhaka league started on April 12 this year and will end mid-June. Three matches will be played on Wednesday in the first round of the Super Six stage. Gazi will play Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited in Fatullah while Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club will take on Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club at BKSP 3. Abahani Limited will face Prime at BKSP 4 in the other game. Gazi are at the top of the points table with 18 points and need two wins to claim the championship. Abahani, Doleshwar and Prime all have 16 points each.
