BCB chief Nazmul: Supreme Court verdict revolutionary
The BCB president Nazmul Hasan has termed the Supreme Court’s verdict on the cricket board's constitution amendment issue as revolutionary. The SC on Wednesday ruled that the BCB has rights to amend its constitution. Headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, a three-member bench of the Appellate Division passed the order after disposing an appeal filed by the BCB and National Sports Council. The appeal was filed against a High Court verdict.

The verdict had declared an amendment to the BCB’s constitution, made by the NSC, illegal back in January 2013. The High Court that year termed the amended BCB constitution illegal, citing reasons that the NSC did not hold the authority to make the change. This was after a writ petition was filed by cricket organisers Yousuf Jamil Babu and Mobasher Hossain. The SC ruling on Wednesday means that now there is no impediment to the BCB holding an election and the NSC will no longer have the right to amend the constitution of cricket's governing body in the country.
“It is tough to comment on the court verdict straightaway, given that we are yet to receive a copy of the verdict from the court. We will have to wait for that. But what I have been able to understand so far is that the verdict has been given for the betterment of Bangladesh cricket. Now we need to call AGM (Annual General Meeting) and EGM (Executive General Meeting) as soon as possible and bring changes to the constitution if needed. It is a revolutionary verdict for the cricket of our country,” BCB chief Nazmul told the media in Mirpur on Wednesday.
The court now is to give directives and make observations regarding the authority of the BCB and the NSC in full judgement which will be released later. Until the copy of the verdict is received, the BCB cannot make any real moves for holding the next election. The current board’s term is set to end in October this year. “We have called a board meeting on Sunday where we will decide the dates for the EGM and AGM and also the venue. But this is subject to the copy of the verdict which we are yet to receive. We cannot confirm anything before receiving and understanding the verdict properly. We are expecting to receive the copy of the verdict soon,” the BCB supremo explained. The legal issue had put the current board’s legality in question. However, with the term about to end and the case disposed now, there is a sigh of relief. “Now that the case has been disposed I think it is good news for our cricket. The only fear we had is that the current board would have been in trouble if the election was held under the previous constitution, the constitution which was made before the last amendment. That would have put us in trouble and our term could have been questioned,” said Nazmul.
