Tamim finally speaks on alleged hate crime incident
Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal finally spoke out on his decision to suddenly end his stay with English county Essex. Both Tamim and Essex had termed the reason “personal” after the left-hander played just one game in the NatWest T20 Blast before flying back home. But some media reported that Tamim, along with his family, fell victim of “hate crime”. Tamim then took to social media to counter the statement, claiming the reports to be “untrue”. Later, the 28-year old during an interview with a Dhaka-based web news portal on Tuesday expressed disappointment with the unfortunate episode.
“It is injustice and unfair to spread events which never took place. I had to leave due to personal reason. Not fair to the club who honoured my reasons and allowed me to leave on such short notice,” said Tamim.
The southpaw said he and his family had to suffer greatly as some media spread rumours, which never really took place. “Honestly, I was hurt by how it was reported in the media. Those who spread such wrong information forget the trauma and thousands of questions one has to face,” he said. “It would not have mattered if the news was limited to me only. I am used to handling and facing such situations. But unfortunately, my wife also had to suffer. One incorrect news made my wife receive thousands of phone calls and text messages. She literally had to answer 500 different people that the incident reported was not true. She does not deserve it and this made me upset a lot,” explained Tamim, Bangladesh’s highest run-scorer across all three formats. The news “Tamim victim of hate crime” took only moments to spread out in world media. The reports did not present evidence of the claimed “hate crime incident” and were rather limited to quotes from unnamed sources. “I was amazed and disappointed to see the efforts made to establish the false reports. I had expected some respect for my departure, which was totally personal. I had thought that they will at least wait for me to return to Dhaka first and then write, if needed. But unfortunately, that never happened,” said Tamim. “On top of that, efforts were made to proof the false reports. I believe one needs to have proper evidence to counter someone’s denial. Unnamed sources to proof something is never the way,” the Chittagong lad added. Tamim informed that he took lessons from the whole incident and expects the same from the media as well. He did not give any immediate reaction to the news, given that he did not want to complicate the situation further for himself and his family.

Tamim joined Essex for the Natwest T20 Blast on July 8 and played a game the following day. But after playing just one game, the Bangladesh cricketer decided to return home on July 11. Essex in their official statement on Tamim’s departure termed the reason “personal” and had requested privacy on the issue. But some media in Bangladesh, based on information from unnamed sources, reported that Tamim returned home abruptly because of “hate crime” and that they were chased by some people in East London.

Tamim immediately denied the incident. The incident had no police report and evidence. Even a few England-based media reported the “claimed incident” to be unfounded.
