Duminy predicts Bangladesh ODIs will be tougher than Tests
Cricket South Africa Invitation XI captain JP Duminy believes Bangladesh are a far more better team in the shorter formats and that South Africa will have to play really well against the Tigers, compared to the Test series. Bangladesh were defeated in both the Test matches as the home side was thoroughly dominant. But Duminy on Wednesday said Bangladesh are relatively more dangerous and competitive in the shorter formats. "I certainly do believe the ODI series will be tougher for us to win against Bangladesh compared to the Test series. I think the Test team played exceptionally well and dominated almost every day. It’s nice to see South Africa dominating particularly after the series loss against England,” said Duminy during their practice session, ahead of their practice match against Bangladesh at Mangaung Oval Thursday.

“But from the one-day perspective, Bangladesh have really stepped up their game recently. And we are going to have to play well to beat them. I am looking forward to a hard-fought series,” he informed. Duminy also informed that the return of key players like all-rounder Shakib al Hasan will certainly boost the Tigers in the shorter formats. “No doubt it will be a big boost for Bangladesh as Shakib al Hasan returns in the shorter formats. Obviously they missed Shakib in the Tests. He is a big player for them and a match-winner. So we are going to have to play well in the coming formats. I always believe that, shorter the format means closer the teams are. This is a great opportunity for the Invitational team to dent Bangladesh. They must be low in confidence after the 2-0 loss. It’s important for us to put on a performance,” he explained. South Africa bowlers bowled really well in both the Tests, despite the tracks being batting-friendly. The Proteas pace attack used the deck more effectively and often tested the Bangladesh batsmen with short balls. Duminy, who is also in the Proteas’ ODI squad against Bangladesh, said the South Africa bowling unit will have definite plans to unsettle Bangladesh batsmen in the upcoming series.

“I think there will be a bit of short-ball challenge in the ODI series as well. Obviously the formats changed so the strategy will be changed accordingly. But there will be definitely some sort of plan after watching the Test series, according to the opposition’s strength and weaknesses. The privilege of seeing footage these days, gives opportunities to the teams to get their opposition out. So there will be definitely plans and strategies and we will discuss it in next few days,” said the left-handed batsman. AB de Villiers will return to action with the practice match as he had taken rest from Test cricket for quite a long time. The only warm-up game before the three-match ODI series starts at 10am local time, 2pm Bangladesh standard time.
