Killer Miller sends Bangladesh empty handed

South Africa won the second and final T20I by 83 runs to seal the series 2-0 after middle-order David Miller blasted the fastest hundred in the history of T20I cricket, against Bangladesh at Senwes Park Sunday. Miller reached the milestone off just 35 balls. The previous fastest T20I century belonged to another South African, Richard Levi, who needed 45 deliveries against New Zealand five years ago in Hamilton. Chasing the massive 225-run target, Bangladesh managed to score 141 before losing all of their wickets within 18.3 overs. And so, just like the Test match and ODI series, the Tigers were whitewashed in the T20I series as well.

The Tigers’ start while chasing was good however, as openers Soumya Sarkar and Imrul Kayes smashed 17 runs in the first over. But from thereon in, they lost four wickets in the next five overs to virtually hand the game to the Proteas. Soumya was the highest scorer for Bangladesh with a 27-ball 44, featuring half a dozen fours and a six, while No 6 batsman Mahmudullah scored 24 off 20 deliveries. Interim South Africa captain JP Duminy and spinner Aaron Phangiso bagged two wickets each.

Earlier, Bangladesh T20I captain Shakib al Hasan won the toss and elected to field. Shakib opened the bowling for Bangladesh and notched two wickets, that of opener Mangaliso Mosehle (five) and Duminy (four). But opener Hashim Amla played a beautiful innings at the other end and kept the scoreboard ticking along for the Proteas. Amla got caught at deep mid-wicket off all-rounder Saifuddin’s bowling in the 17th over. Amla’s 85 off 51 balls was composed with 11 boundaries and a sixer.

But after that, it was the Miller show as the left-hander blasted as many as nine sixes and seven fours. Miller was particularly harsh on Saifuddin, hammering a whopping five sixes in the 19th over. The southpaw was on the verge of joining India’s Yuvraj Singh, who smashed six sixers off as many balls against England’s Stuart Broad 10 years ago in a T20I. Miller though was extremely lucky throughout his innings as stumper Mushfiqur Rahim dropped him when he was batting on nought in the third ball of the 11th over.

The Proteas smashed 146 in their last 10 overs, including 61 in the last three. Miller was adjudged man of the match and player of the series. The Tigers made one change to the playing XI from the first T20I at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein Thursday, including wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Das in place of paceman Shafiul Islam.

The Proteas on the other hand brought in wicket-keeper Mosehle and pacer Dwaine Pretorius at the expense of opener Quinton de Kock and seamer Dane Paterson respectively.
