Mashrafe: We won because we played with freedom

Update : 13 Dec 2017, 09:00 AM
BPL 2017 champion Rangpur Riders’ captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza gave credit to the players after sealing the elusive crown and said the reason behind their success was playing with freedom. Rangpur dominated the grand finale of BPL 5 at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Tuesday, beating holder Dhaka Dynamites by 57 runs, thanks to a blistering knock of 146 off just 69 balls from West Indies great Chris Gayle.

“We qualified for the knockout stage as the fourth team. Since then we had one target in mind. And that was we will play all-out cricket, and with freedom. We will play with complete freedom out there. If a bowler wants to bowl a yorker then he can bowl a yorker. We know that Gayle or [Brendon] McCullum play attacking cricket. So we told them to play shots out there. And play their natural game. I think that’s why we got success,” said Mashrafe during the post-match press conference. This is the fourth time Mashrafe has tasted BPL title winning success and the prolific captain praised the big hitters in his team for the latest triumph.“Obviously it feels good to win the title. When we signed big players like Gayle and McCullum, among others, our owners expected at least the semi-final stage from us. So they were happy when we reached the top four. We knew that we had to play two qualifiers but at the same point there was less expectation upon us. And that really helped us. We knew that we have big-hitters in our team like [Johnson] Charles, Gayle and McCullum. If they play their natural game and create the damage then it will be difficult for any team to win against us. And our big hitters delivered exactly what we expected from them,” Mashrafe concluded.
