Bangladesh batsmen slide down in Test ranking
Bangladesh batsmen tumbled down in the ICC Test batsmen’s ranking following their heavy defeat in the second and final Test match against Sri Lanka. The Tigers lost to visiting Sri Lanka by 215 runs Saturday at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka following severe batting debacle in both the innings. The Bangladesh batters could survive only a little over 75 overs against the Lankan bowlers in the game, which lasted a little less than two and a half days. The home side in the first innings scored only 110 and 123 in the second. With 45, lower-order batsman Mehedi Hasan Miraz was the top-scorer for Bangladesh in the game. The batting failure reflected in the latest ranking where almost all the Bangladesh batsmen moved down in the list. All-rounder Shakib al Hasan, who missed the Test due to injury, stayed at 22nd spot but opener Tamim Iqbal has fallen five places to 26th. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim dropped three places to 28th while top-order batsman Mominul Haque slipped three places to 30th. Mahmudullah has plummeted six places to 54th while Sabbir Rahman has tumbled 17 places to 104th. The Bangladesh bowlers however, made improvement in the Test standing. Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and seamer Mustafizur Rahman are headed in the right direction, while returning veteran left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak reappeared in 95th spot after his five wickets in the match.

Taijul, who took four for 83 and four for 76, has moved two places to a career-high 34th, while Mustafizur has jumped 10 places to 49th following match figure of five for 66. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka batsman Roshen Silva continued his rise in the Test batsmen’s ranking following a player of the match and series performance. Roshen scored 56 and 70 not out on a pitch in which 40 wickets fell for just 681 runs inside three days. For this performance, the 29-year old has been rewarded with a jump of 29 places, which has put him inside the top-50 (49th) for the first time in his career. Roshen scored 109 in the first Test, which had lifted him from 106th to 78th. The rise in the latest batsmen’s ranking has made Roshen the seventh highest-ranked Sri Lankan after Dinesh Chandimal 12th (down by three places), Kusal Mendis 21st (up by two places), Angelo Mathews (24th), Dimuth Karunaratne 32nd (down by four places), Dhananjaya de Silva (38th) and Niroshan Dickwella 45th (down by four places). As far as the Sri Lanka bowlers are concerned, Akila Dananjaya has made an impressive entry following his three for 20 and five for 24 in the Dhaka Test. The off-spinner is 58th, while fast bowler Suranga Lakmal, who took three for 25 in the first innings, has moved up three places to 30th. Rangana Herath, who became the first left-arm spinner to take 400 Test wickets during the match, has remained his country’s highest-ranked bowler despite slipping one place to eight, following his four wickets in Mirpur.
