2017 In Review: Five best Bangladesh moments
2017 was a cherishable year for Bangladesh cricket team in more ways than one. The Tigers registered some historic wins and brilliant individual records throughout the year. Dhaka Tribune takes a look back at the five most memorable Bangladesh moments in 2017. Shakib’s 217 against New Zealand The challenge was enormous, playing against New Zealand in windy condition and on a bowling friendly, green wicket. All-rounder Shakib al Hasan however, rose to the occasion by scoring a double ton. Shakib's 279-ball 217, featuring 31 fours, is the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi in Test. Shakib, and wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim added 359 runs for the fifth wicket stand – the Tigers' highest for any wicket in Test. Mushfiq's 260-ball 159 in that game is also an innings to remember. Overall, a great day for Bangladesh cricket. 100th Test win The Tigers contested their 100th Test, against Sri Lanka at P Sara Oval in Colombo in March. The atmosphere was not good for Team Bangladesh as they lost the first Test comprehensively against the Lankans. The experienced Mahmudullah was dropped for the second Test as the team management decided to go in with youngsters Mosaddek Hossain and Sabbir Rahman. However, with their backs against the wall, the Tigers came back strongly in the Colombo Test, sealing a brilliant four-wicket win. Shakib scored a century while opener Tamim Iqbal made a superb 82 while chasing on a fifth day pitch. Mashrafe’s sudden retirement from T20I Bangladesh's tour of Sri Lanka came to be remembered in many ways, chief among them the Tigers getting to play their 100th Test, and winning the first ODI in Dambulla, to name but a few. After the second ODI got washed out, the Tigers had the golden opportunity of winning the series as well. But Bangladesh failed to chase down 270-odd runs in the third ODI as the series ended 1-1. The eventful series however, took a backseat right at the end following the retirement of captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza from the shortest format prior to the first T20I at Premadasa Stadium. It was learnt that Mashrafe was forced to retire by the team management and he announced the decision just before the toss. Shakib led the side in the second T20I as Bangladesh won the game to level the series 1-1. Majestic Shakib-Mahmudullah stand inspires Tigers to Champions Trophy semis Shakib and Mahmudullah made history for Bangladesh in ODIs as they formed a 224-run partnership while chasing down New Zealand's 265 to steer the Tigers to a five-wicket win in Cardiff in June. The Tigers reached the semis, and knocked out the Black Caps from the Champions Trophy. Bangladesh were under pressure while chasing as they lost four wickets for just 44 runs, the Kiwi pacers right on the money. But Shakib (114) and Mahmudullah (102 not out) handled the situation brilliantly, counter-attacking with controlled aggression. Beating Australia in Mirpur Test The Aussies finally arrived in Bangladesh for a two-Test series after much delay and drama. The series created a positive hype for Bangladesh as they beat Sri Lanka away from home. The players even believed they could win 2-0 against the mighty Aussies. The Tigers backed their words with action by defeating Australia by 20 runs at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka in August. Shakib took 10 wickets and was adjudged player of the match. The visiting side however, won the second Test as the series ended all-square.
