Walsh: Shakib will play as long as he is fit
The BCB's surprise decision to include T20I captain Shakib al Hasan in the Bangladesh squad has raised eyebrows in the cricketing arena. The decision by the board, which came at a time when the Tigers are on their toes ahead of a do-or-die encounter against Nidahas T20I tri-nation series host Sri Lanka, is being seen as a frantic move, bearing in mind the physical condition of the cricketer in question. The BCB in the shape of CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury and chief physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury stated that Shakib has recovered from the finger injury that he picked up in January earlier this year. However, no claims were made if the ace all-rounder is match fit. Shakib's condition will be assessed by the team management Friday morning and if all goes well, he will take to the field in the evening at R Premadasa Cricket Stadium in Colombo. Before flying to Colombo Thursday and joining the Bangladesh team to make it a 17-member squad, Shakib was reported to have undergone a bit of a net session. "Like any other player he will be assessed. If he is fit, he will be considered for selection. We are hoping he will be fit enough to play. He had a net session in Dhaka. There won't be any confusion," said Bangladesh interim head coach Courtney Walsh to the media in Colombo Thursday.

Walsh informed that Shakib was always part of the Bangladesh set-up for the Nidahas series. The BCB had initially declared a Bangladesh squad with Shakib as the captain. But slow recovery had kept the cricketer away and the charge to lead the side was handed over to all-rounder Mahmudullah. "We were hoping to have him from the beginning of the tournament. He was always part of the set-up. We knew he was going to make a comeback if there was any chance for him. It is nothing to worry about. Once Shakib is fit, we are going to welcome him to the team," said Windies pace legend Walsh. There are questions which however, remained unanswered, and on top of the list was how the dressing room is to going to react regarding the sudden inclusion. Bangladesh have put on a decent show in the series so far under the leadership of Mahmudullah and stands at a crucial point where they can either make or break their chance of reaching the final. Shakib coming into action will mean the charge to lead will be handed over to him and the responsibility of adapting to the change quickly will be resting on the cricketers.
