BCB still hunting for head coach
BCB president Nazmul Hasan Wednesday informed that they are still searching for the head coach for the national team. The BCB boss expressed hope that they would be able to appoint someone who can take charge from next month. The Bangladesh head coach’s post has been vacant ever since Sri Lankan Chandika Hathurusingha resigned in November last year. Since then, the BCB has been on the lookout for a new head coach but was unsuccessful in its pursuit. “We are working on finding the new head coach of Bangladesh team. Hopefully we will finalise the new head coach within this month,” said Nazmul to the media after the board meeting. “We have been managing the coaching staff’s contract by a system in the last two to three years. In that system, when there is a schedule or fixture of play, then coach becomes available for the team. And when there is no game or fixture then coach leaves. Just like we have similar kind of contract with Courtney Walsh.

“We have 200 days of contract with Walsh in a year. That means he can stay out of Bangladesh in the remaining 165 days. So basically we have discussed how these coaches can be more involved with the board or players in near future. “We believe there are some positions in coaching staff where a person can be needed as full-time or every day. Like the physio of the team. So we are analysing these options and preparing a new contract for these kind of positions soon. The next contract might be drafted as per our requirement. We are discussing and planning regarding this,” he explained. Following Hathurusingha’s resignation, the BCB took the interview of renowned coaches like Richard Pybus and Phil Simmons. Later, Simmons took over the job of Afghanistan head coach and Pybus was appointed High Performance Director of Cricket West Indies.

Bangladesh played the ODI tri-nation series and two-match Test and T20I series against Sri Lanka without a head coach. Former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud was selected as the technical director of the team in the absence of a head coach. Bangladesh failed to win any of the series and performed poorly. Later, Walsh was appointed the interim coach during the Nidahas T20I tri-series where Bangladesh narrowly lost to India in the final. Bangladesh’s next international assignment is against Afghanistan in June this year where the Tigers are likely play three or four T20Is in Dehradun, India.
