The first edition of the tournament, involving 32 cricket academies based in Dhaka, is set to start Sunday

Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza has praised the BCB’s initiative to introduce the BCB Academy Cup.

The first edition of the tournament, involving 32 cricket academies based in Dhaka, is set to start Sunday.

Ankur Cricket Club will take on Clemon Indira Road Academy in the opening game of the tournament at City Club field.

Mashrafe, who was the chief guest in the trophy-unveiling ceremony of the tournament Saturday said, “The BCB has taken a very good initiative and I would like to thank the BCB development committee for that. This tournament is a good platform for Dhaka-based cricketers who do not get to play the professional leagues. I hope this tournament will find fresh talents and allow those players to get into mainstream cricket.”

Former Bangladesh spinner Mohammad Rafique, who joined as the advisor of the BCB High Performance squad, believes the Dhaka-based cricket academies will make the best use of the platform and highlight their respective talented cricketers.

“There are lots of cricket academies in Dhaka and the cricketers do not get to play much competitive cricket. I hope BCB will be able to find talented cricketers from this tournament,” said Rafique to the media.

Meanwhile, chairman of the BCB development committee, Khaled Mahmud informed that the selectors and members of the development committee will be involved in finding out the talents from this tournament.

“They will be responsible of finding at least 20 to 25 cricketers from this competition. Those cricketers will be provided better training facilities and the four semi-finalists in the tournament will be aided by the board. At least 20 academies will be brought under better facilities in the next five years of the tournament,” informed former Bangladesh captain Mahmud.

The first round matches will be 40-overs-per-side affairs and will be played at BKSP, City Club field and Dhaka University field.

Cricketers aged from 15 to 18 are eligible for the tournament.

However, cricketers who are registered at CCDM (Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis) will not be allowed to participate.
