South Africa legend and former Proteas head coach Gary Kirsten during his three-day long visit to Dhaka will be responsible for an “internal team audit”, informed BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury.

The former India head coach reached Dhaka Sunday evening. Yesterday, Kirsten spent three individual sessions at a city hotel with senior Bangladesh cricketers in the shape of Mashrafe bin Mortaza, Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim.

According to the BCB CEO, the board had initially thought of roping in Kirsten for the 2019 World Cup but the South African pulled himself out of the deal citing other engagements.

“He will be working with us as an advisor. We had a long-term plan with him but that was not possible due to his other engagements. For now, Kristen is with us until we find a coach for the national team,” said Nizamuddin to the media at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Monday.

Kirsten during his short stay will be busy doing an internal audit and advise the board the best names for the Bangladesh head coach’s job, based on the demands of the team.

“He is working on how the team can improve and prepare for the ICC events ahead, like the World Cup, World T20. He is to submit a report to the board regarding this. At the same time, Kirsten is also working on finding the team a coach. We have already provided him a list of the coaches which we had looked into. Kirsten has a list too. He will now understand the team situation and find or suggest the board the possible options,” Nizamuddin explained.

“Kirsten is having meetings with the players and scheduled to sit with the board directors during the audit. He is calling the individuals by himself and is setting up the meetings. The board is only providing him logistical support,” the BCB high-up added.

Bangladesh have been without a full-time head coach since Chandika Hathurusingha’s resignation in November last year. Many names had emerged for the Bangladesh coaching job but the board was not able to ink a deal.

According to the BCB CEO, efforts are being made to complete the ongoing process before the team travel to the West Indies next month.

“We have a target to complete the process before West Indies tour. Then depending on the progress of the work and situation we will decide the next step,” said Nizamuddin.
