Bangladesh's Shakib al Hasan plays a shot during day one of their first Test against the West Indies in Antigua Wednesday AFP

Bangladesh succumbed to their lowest Test total of 43 all-out in 18.4 overs in the first innings of the first Test match against the Windies at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. Excellent fast bowling by the Windies aided by some poor shot selection led to a nightmare start for new Tigers head coach Steve Rhodes.

Windies won the toss and captain Jason Holder decided to bowl on a surface with a greenish tinge and movement on offer for the bowlers. The first wicket fell as Tamim Iqbal was out by Kemar Roach to a good length delivery shaping in and seaming away off the pitch. The ball took the outside edge of the bat for an easy catch for the wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich.

Mominul Haque then followed suit driving half-heartedly to a length delivery on the up. The ball took the outside edge of Mominul’s bat and came at a nice height for the gully fielder Shai Hope, who made no mistake.

Mushfiqur Rahim added to Bangladesh’s misery getting out for a duck, LBW to a length ball jagging back in to him by Roach. He took a review but Hawkeye showed the ball hitting middle stump.

Shakib, captaining the Test side for the first time in seven years could not help matters as his innings lasted just two balls. He edged out to a good length delivery from Roach. He too failed to add to the score.

Mahmudullah would then lose his wicket the very next delivery which was probably the best wicket-taking ball of the lot. The ball was the perfect length with an off stump line, with away movement off the pitch to once again take the outside edge of the bat for an easy catch for the wicket-keeper.

Roach was on a hat-trick but Nurul Hasan managed to avert that, flicking his first delivery through midwicket for two runs. That would end his spell of five overs, eight runs and five wickets as he hobbled off the field for treatment on his right knee.

Liton Das started playing some shots against Miguel Cummins, slicing a pull for a lucky boundary. But he took one risk too many eventually getting caught at backward point by Roston Chase giving Cummins his first wicket.  Liton’s 25 would be the top score in the innings and the only player to reach double digit for Bangladesh.

Cummins got his second wicket in the last delivery of the same over.

Nurul tried to play through the onside but only managed to outside edge to second slip for four, with Holder taking an easy catch. His third wicket came in his next over with Mehedi Hasan Miraz driving away from his body, beaten by late away swing, and edging to Devon Smith at second slip.

Holder would also get in amongst the wickets, cleaning up the tail, taking the wickets of Kamrul Islam Rabbi and Abu Jayed for nought and two respectively. The Windies would remain unscathed in the first session ending it at nine for no loss after three overs before lunch.
