Bangladesh captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza looks at the wicket in Guyana Saturday BCB

Visiting Bangladesh will be looking to bury the bitter memories of the two-match Test series against the West Indies when the two teams take on each other in the first of three ODIs at Providence Stadium in Guyana. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm Sunday night, Bangladesh standard time.

The Tigers will play their first ODI since January this year. This is also only their second ODI assignment this year. To add to that, the series is their first against the West Indies since 2014.

The Bangladesh dressing room will be boosted with the return of their most successful captain, Mashrafe bin Mortaza. The veteran right-arm pacer almost went unavailable for the West Indies ODIs over concerns with his ill wife fighting a blood disease.

After a lot of criticism, both from the BCB and the supporters following the Test series failure, the Tigers will need to start afresh, and their recent warm-up win will give them a bit of confidence.

Although there is no doubt that the wicket for the practice match will have no similarity to that of the main game, the Tigers batsmen will be relieved having got some runs under their belt.

In their warm-up game against Cricket West Indies Vice Chancellor’s XI Thursday, featuring Caribbean cricketers Chris Gayle, Chadwick Walton and Andre Russell, the Tigers registered a four-wicket win chasing 228 runs.

Off-spinner Mosaddek Hossain ruled the bowling chart taking four wickets conceding 14 runs while wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim was unbeaten on 75. Opener Liton Das added 70 to their successful chase.

Apart from opening batsman Tamim Iqbal, all-rounders Shakib al Hasan and Mahmudullah and Mushfiq, Bangladesh will be looking for runs from the likes of Anamul Haque, Liton, batsman Sabbir Rahman, Mosaddek and youngster Nazmul Hossain Shanto.

With the ball, the Tigers will rely on Mashrafe, along with left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who is back in the fold after recovering from injury. Right-arm pacer Rubel Hossain can also be effective on his day.

The home side have only won six of their 13 ODIs at this venue and the surface is expected to be slightly on the slower side.

The Windies meanwhile, have made several changes to the side since their last ODI, in March this year. Russell is set to make a comeback to the ODI side after three years while seamer Alzarri Joseph and batsman Kieran Powell have been brought in to the team.

The Windies, despite missing the likes of pacemen Shannon Gabriel and Miguel Cummins, boast captain-cum-pacer Jason Holder in their ranks, alongside Joseph, all-rounder Keemo Paul and spinners Devendra Bishoo and Ashley Nurse.
