The four-day tournament featuring eight teams from seven divisions with the other side being Dhaka Metropolis will get underway in the first week of October

The BCB’s strong stance to better the first-class cricket in the country will begin in earnest with the kick off of the upcoming season of the National Cricket League. The four-day tournament featuring eight teams from seven divisions with the other side being Dhaka Metropolis will get underway in the first week of October.

Chief national selector Minhajul Abedin informed that plans to improve the standard of the first-class tournament have already been chalked out in a meeting recently.

The board has long been yearning to develop a strong first-class competition in the domestic arena but was forced to take a step following Bangladesh’s humiliating loss in the two-match Test series against the West Indies, which concluded earlier this month. Bangladesh experienced horrific batting debacles to face a whitewash in the series.

Former Bangladesh captain Minhajul said their first task will be to get the first-class cricketers fit for the longer-version. Minhajul stated that a fitness camp involving the BCB-paid first-class cricketers will start in the first week of September.

“We have lots of paid players in first-class cricket. We discussed criterion, system and fitness of the players and this will begin from the first week of September. The target of this is to ensure the first-class cricketers match or are near to the fitness level of the national players. We are involving the fitness trainers and physios for this,” said Minhajul to the media at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Saturday.

“We saw many cricketers in High Performance face injury. This happens especially when the cricketers come to the camp following a domestic season. We have the NCL starting from the first week of October so we will have around a month to get the first-class cricketers in shape. Hope we will be able to set a standard from this,” he added.

Necessary plans to ensure a competitive first-class tournament have been made and await execution, informed Minhajul. The former Bangladesh cricketer emphasised on the importance of a standard first-class platform in the country if the Tigers aim to get better in Tests.

“We are working to ensure this tournament is competitive and that the cricketers are serious about the competition. We have a coordination meeting two or three weeks before the tournament starts. We will put in place a standard of selection. If we want to establish ourselves in Tests, there is no way than to have a standard domestic first-class tournament. Everyone involved in this tournament needs to contribute. Hope we will be able to start a good thing from the forthcoming season and that will begin with the NCL,” he concluded.
