Unpaid cricketers of Brothers Union from the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League season 2017-18 filed an official complaint to the BCB and CWAB (Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh) Sunday. The cricketers met BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury and submitted an official complaint against the club which had narrowly survived relegation.

Former Bangladesh cricketer and Brothers Union captain from the last season, Alok Kapali informed that the BCB CEO has promised to solve the issue following the Eid-ul-Adha holidays. This however, did not satisfy the players given their experiences so far.

The cricketers of the club have 25% of their salaries unpaid. Kapali informed that the club have so far given multiple deadlines.

Brothers Union had first promised to clear the dues ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr in June this year. The cricketers also questioned the efficiency of the “Players by Choice” system that was introduced to avoid irregular payments in the Dhaka League.

According to Kapali, the system had meant that the players were paid less but they had agreed to it, thinking of the pros.

“Usually our salaries are given within one month of the end of the league. We communicated with Brothers Union accordingly. They said they would pay before the Eid-ul-Fitr. But they didn’t confirm any date as the Eid went by. Then they said would give our salaries before Eid-ul-Adha. But (Sunday) is the last working day (before Eid-ul-Adha) and we are still clueless about their whereabouts,” said Kapali to the media at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Sunday.

“We had no option but to contact the CWAB and the BCB. Now they are saying that our salaries will be given in September,” the former Bangladesh cricketer added.

Kapali said the cricketers had opted for the Players by Choice system to avoid issues with payment and emphasised upon the importance of the income of a cricketer from the Dhaka League.

“We are still having these problems. We have been coming here for three months now. We again have to think whether Players by Choice system will be good for us or not. We used to play under a contract before. Back then, we didn’t have these problems,” said Kapali.

“Everyone doesn’t play in the BPL. So, the (Dhaka) Premier League is very important. It is sad to not get our salaries in time. We play to provide for our families,” the Brothers Union captain added.

Meanwhile, CWAB secretary Debabrata Pal said the association has been working for a long time now but has not been able to reach a solution with regards to the issue.

“I spoke with the cricket board and the CCDM (Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis). Officially, two letters were given to the board. But the payments have still not been cleared,” said Debabrata.

Brothers Union cricketers are the second batch of players to complain to the BCB over unpaid salary.

In May this year, Kalabagan Krira Chakra cricketers had raised their voice over unpaid salaries. Kalabagan later finished at the bottom of the relegation league and was demoted to the First Division Cricket League.
