The franchise have retained Bangladesh left-arm spinner Sanjamul Islam, Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza, Afghanistan middle-order batsman Najibullah Zadran and New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Luke Ronchi. The BPL 2018-19 is scheduled to raise its curtain on January 5 next year

BPL T20 franchise Chittagong Vikings have finally submitted the list of retained players and confirmed their participation in the sixth edition of the tournament. The franchise have retained Bangladesh left-arm spinner Sanjamul Islam, Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza, Afghanistan middle-order batsman Najibullah Zadran and New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Luke Ronchi. The BPL 2018-19 is scheduled to raise its curtain on January 5 next year.

The seven franchises were given September 30 deadline to submit the list of four retained players from last season with the players’ draft set to take place on October 25 in Dhaka. The Vikings however, failed to submit the retention list on time and elevate rumors of withdrawing their team from the T20 franchise league.

It is understood that Vikings’ owners, DBL Group directors, were involved in dispute in running the team further. Losses incurred due to running the BPL franchise was the chief reason for the dispute.

However, the owners had reached a common point and eventually confirmed their participation in the tournament, submitting their list of retained cricketers.

“They have submitted their list of players retained for the past season. It was not the right time for withdrawing the team as you know all the preparation has been taken for the upcoming season and the draft is set to take place later in the month. So we discussed this to the Vikings owners and they eventually confirmed their availability for the season,” said BPL technical committee member and BCB director Jalal Younus to Dhaka Tribune Wednesday.

According to sources, the season is likely to be the last for DBL to run a BPL franchise. The Vikings were given rights to the Chittagong franchise in 2015 and finished last in the league phase.

In the 2016-17 season, the Vikings had finished third in the points table and had played the play-offs. In the 2017-18 season, the side again finished at the bottom of the league table.
