Ludick concedes record 43 runs in an over

The previous record was held by Babu, who conceded 39 runs in a Dhaka Premier League match in 2013 and it was Zimbabwe’s Elton Chigumbura who hit four sixes and three fours in a seven-ball over thanks to a no-ball

Alauddin Babu’s record of conceding the most number of runs in one over five years ago has now been broken. In New Zealand’s Ford Trophy match, Northern Districts pair Joe Carter and Brett Hampton smashed the world record for the most number of runs scored in an over against Central Districts bowler Willem Ludick at Hamilton on Wednesday.

The previous record was held by Babu, who conceded 39 runs in a Dhaka Premier League match in 2013 and it was Zimbabwe’s Elton Chigumbura who hit four sixes and three fours in a seven-ball over thanks to a no-ball.

In Hamilton, Hampton was the one to start the big hitting with a four, followed by two sixes off two waist-high no-balls. Ludick’s next delivery was a legal one but that too went for a six. The next delivery was the only delivery of the over that didn’t go for a boundary as Hampton managed just a single and rotated the strike to Carter.

He then proceeded to finish the last three legal deliveries of the over in grand style hitting all of them for a maximum. The over read: 4, 6NB, 6NB, 6, 1 , 6, 6, 6 and Ludick’s bowling figures ended on an abysmal 85 runs conceded off ten overs for just one wicket.

Conceding six sixes in an over is an extremely rare feat and in international cricket, it has only happened a few times. The first instance happened in the 2007 World Cup as South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs hit six sixes against the Netherlands’ Dan van Bunge and the second instance was in the same year where India’s Yuvraj Singh hit England’s Stuart Broad for six consecutive sixes in the T20I World Cup in South Africa.
