Brathwaite rues lack of partnership

Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam and teammates celebrate the fall of a West Indian wicket during day three of their first Test in Chittagong Saturday Dhaka Tribune/Md Manik

“We didn’t put up any good partnership. We lost wickets too quickly. The ball was doing a lot more in the pitch.  The key is partnerships, whether the top- or middle-order. We didn’t get partnerships early, so it cost us,” said Braithwaite after the match.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite rued their defeat against Bangladesh in their first Test match in Chittagong’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium and blamed their inability to form partnerships for the debacle.

The Windies needed 204 runs to win with almost three days left but their batsmen capitulated to the Bangladesh spinners, and were bundled out for 139 to concede their first Test defeat to the Tigers in Bangladesh.

The Windies lost their first four wickets for 11 and could never recover as they stitched together just one fifty-plus partnership in the innings, that for the ninth wicket.

“We didn’t put up any good partnership. We lost wickets too quickly. The ball was doing a lot more in the pitch.  The key is partnerships, whether the top- or middle-order. We didn’t get partnerships early, so it cost us,” said Braithwaite after the match.

On a tricky pitch, where spinners from both sides enjoyed a wicket-feast, West Indian middle-order batsman Shimron Hetmyer decided to attack and caused some anxiety to the host as he made 63 and 27 in two innings respectively.

The carefree attitude of Hetmyer might raise some questions but his skipper batted on his behalf in the presser.

“He bats in that way. He is quite an attacking batsman. But you have to be good in defence as well. Obviously he can attack quite well. Each batsman has their specific game plan, so that’s his game and he did well,” said Braithwaite.

The visitor’s skipper was dejected with the loss, but expressed confidence of doing well in the Dhaka Test that starts Friday.

But he will lose one of his key weapons in the form of pacer Shannon Gabriel, who is banned for the game due to disciplinary issue.

But the 25-year old thought they can do their job despite missing their premium bowler.

“Obviously he is a crucial bowler but we have guys that can follow up. We just want to stick to our plans and I think we will do well in that game.”
