Another controversy hits Dhaka’s cricket

The latest to hit the headlines is the incident during the Old DOHS and Agrani Bank game in the First Division Cricket League in Fatullah’s Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Friday

The Dhaka Cricket League has been marred with yet another incident of anomaly. The ongoing First and Third Division Dhaka League have been point of discussions recently with the media reporting on the on- and off-the-field irregularities to give advantage to a team, or teams, in the tournament.

The latest to hit the headlines is the incident during the Old DOHS and Agrani Bank game in the First Division Cricket League in Fatullah’s Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Friday.

Agrani Bank chasing 295 runs needed 34 in the last three overs with four wickets in hand. The 48th over fetched six runs, but it was the second last over which saw 24 being scored, taking Agrani close to a victory.

With four runs needed to win in the last over, according to reports, an Agrani official called Towhid Tarek Khan, batting on 53 at that time, near the ropes. It has been claimed that batsman was told not to score runs and let the game go to the opponent.

Perhaps Towhid could not agree to the command and went out of the field as retired hurt. The new batsman Shahidul Alam faced the last six balls of the chase, and did not score a single run.

No particular claim of the effect of the DOHS-Agrani game result has been made, but has raised doubts because of the equation in the points table. DOHS going into the Agrani game had already confirmed the championship, and promotion to the Dhaka Premier League with 27 points, and the win in the game had extended the lead to 29.

Agrani were on 21 points, followed by Rupganj Tigers Cricket Team and Partex Sporting Club, on 21 points apiece. Partex and Rupaganj faced each other in their last game of the season Saturday, and Partex won the game by three wickets.

The victory saw Partex finish the competition at second with 23 points, and qualify for next season’s Premier League. Agrani finished third with 21 points.

The DOHS-Agrani incident is being highly discussed, but no official complaint has been made till date. Dhaka First Division Cricket League co-ordinator Rafique Saturday informed Dhaka Tribune that the committee has not received any complaints thus far.
