Mehedi Hasan Miraz dived to stop the overthrow, but umpires were of the opinion that he attempted it after it went past him, and according to their discretion, it was an act of deliberate distraction
Rajshahi Kings captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz was found guilty of “fake fielding” against Rangpur Riders during their Bangladesh Premier League match at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur Sunday, and the on-field umpires awarded five penalty runs against him.
Rangpur’s Rilee Rossouw edged the fifth ball of the 12th over, bowled by Miraz, to square-leg before a throw was directed at the striking end.
Miraz dived to stop the overthrow, but umpires were of the opinion that he attempted it after it went past him, and according to their discretion, it was an act of deliberate distraction.
According to section 41 of ICC by-laws, the fielding side are punished with five runs as penalty of the offense, and the ball would be counted as dead ball.
Following the game, Miraz said, “I was aware of the rule. Actually that was my mistake. I had to stop the ball back then, but it was a bit far. That’s why I put in the false dive. I knew about the five-run penalty. I won’t do it again. I was a bit excited. The seniors of our team told me to be patient. Laurie Evans was telling me to keep my cool. It will be better for us if you stay cool. At that stage, they (Rangpur) required seven per over.”
