The head coach gave some positive news as in-form middle-order batsman Mohammad Mithun will be back for the first Test which starts on Thursday

Bangladesh head coach Steve Rhodes told the media that wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim might miss the first Test against New Zealand at Hamilton due to injury on Wednesday.

“I’m not quite sure where Mushfiq will be with his recovery so he’s a doubt for the first Test,” Rhodes said.

But the head coach gave some positive news as in-form middle-order batsman Mohammad Mithun will be back for the first Test which starts on Thursday.

The right-handed batsman missed the third match of the One Day International series with a leg injury he picked up in the second ODI.

The 29-year old was arguably the most impressive batsman for the Tigers during the ODIs where is scored back-to-back fifties – 62 and 57 – to rebuild he innings after the top order had collapsed.

“I’m hopeful Mithun will be fine. Mithun looks in good nick. He’s got two good scores in the ODI series and he’ll be ready,” added Rhodes.

On the other hand, Liton Das, who has been struggling with form will most likely be handed wicket-keeping duties in the first Test if Mushfiq misses out.

The right-handed batsman has scored three runs with scores of 1, 1, and 1 in the three ODIs against the Kiwis so far.

Rhodes believes it’s time for Liton to step up and do a job with the team in need.

“Injuries happen and people miss games but it tests the depth of the squad. One door closes, and another opens and whoever comes in has to step up. Liton knows he’s going to keep wickets and bat so his job is to do his best and try and replace Mushfiq,” the head coach explained.

With the conditions in New Zealand being a test of technique and temperament of the batsman, it will also be an excellent opportunity for the fast bowlers to do something special in conditions that will suit them.

Uncapped fast bowler Ebadat Hossain has been selected as part of the Test squad and he may be given a chance to make his Test debut on Thursday.

The 25-year old was not initially part of the Test squad but got the nod from the selectors after Taskin Ahmed got injured in the BPL.

“I came here previously in 2016 but struggled to adjust to the conditions. This time, it has been much better. Fast bowling coach Courtney Walsh has been working with me to improve my consistency and accuracy,” Ebadat said to the media on Wednesday.

“We had a good practice match where the batsmen performed well and the bowlers got to bowl around 12 overs so I think we’re well prepared for the Tests,” Ebadat explained.
