Being economical with the ball will be key for the spinners in the World Cup 2019, said Bangladesh off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz.

Bearing in mind the pace-friendly conditions of the co-hosts England and Wales, Miraz expects the fast bowlers to take charge of the bowling unit, while the spinners will be there to complement the effort.

“I think the job for the spinners will be more to be economical in this World Cup. There will not be much in the wickets. Doesn’t matter if they are taking wickets or not, they need to make sure they are not leaking runs. An economy of five or 5.5 runs I believe should be a good figure for the spinners, and brilliant if there are one or two wickets in it,” said Miraz to the media at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Sunday.

The last time the Tigers visited England was during the Champions Trophy 2017 and a brilliant effort by the side saw them make it to their maiden ICC semi-final, leaving behind Australia and New Zealand in the group.

“I was part of the team when we played the Champions Trophy in England. Though I played just one game, what I experienced was the wickets are good to bat on. The bowlers need to make sure they are bowling in the right areas, and wait for the batsman to make a mistake. There is not much spin, and ball comes well to the bat. So it is important to work on the bowling areas, and plan how to execute that well. I hope we will be able to put on a good show,” said Miraz.

Majority of the Bangladesh cricketers are now busy with the Dhaka Premier League, which will end in mid-April.

The national selection panel will announce the squad for the World Cup on April 22, and run a week-long camp in Mirpur before the Tigers travel to Ireland in the first week of May for a tri-nation series involving the home side and the West Indies.

According to Miraz, it is wise for the cricketers to play matches, but there is also the need of personal preparation ahead of the world event.

“Considering that we all are busy with the league, we need to ensure of using the gaps during matches in this one month for personal development. I am personally planning to work on my fitness and some bowling drills within the available time I have. Like, I batted for some time in the nets (yesterday), (today) I have got a game and the day after I will work on bowling and fitness. It is important to make good use of these gaps between the matches,” Miraz explained.
