BCB president Nazmul Hassan speaks to journalists Dhaka Tribune

“We actually had the meeting to understand the process of declaring the squads. I initially had thought we needed to declare a team by April 18 and no changes can be made to it until there is a case of injury or something. But this was not right,” said Nazmul

Bangladesh will declare their 15-member squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 today as Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan following a meeting at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Monday informed the media.

Australia, India and New Zealand have already declared their respective squads for the gala event.

The BCB boss explained that the national selectors will declare a 15-member squad for the World Cup and a 17-member team for the tri-nation ODI series involving West Indies and hosts Ireland. Given the luxury of the regulation, the selection panel can make change to the World Cup squad before May 23.

As per the ICC regulations, the one-month window, from April 23 to May 23, changes to a squad can be made without being required to provide any reason. April 23 is the initial deadline to allow ICC to start the logistics process of booking rooms, travel etc. The window till May 23, also allows certain teams that are playing series in the next month to solidify their squads ahead of the world event.

“We actually had the meeting to understand the process of declaring the squads. I initially had thought we needed to declare a team by April 18 and no changes can be made to it until there is a case of injury or something. But this was not right,” said Nazmul.

“We need to declare a team before April 23 and changes can be made until May 23. We have a tri-nation ODI series in Ireland which will finish on May 16. So we can consider performance from that series and make changes if needed,” the BCB boss added.

The national selection panel has been concerned with the recent form of the main stream national cricketers that are to form the squad for the world event. Majority of them since their return from tour of New Zealand has been playing the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League but none has been able to put a notable performance. BCB chief Nazmul also cited anxiety over the fitness of the cricketers who have been dealing with injuries recently.

“There are many cricketers who had been considered for the World Cup squad but they are not fit. So we have reached a point to declare the squad and meet the first deadline and if needed changes due to form or fitness can be made before the final deadline (in May),” Nazmul explained.

With pacer Mashrafe Bin Mortaza as the captain the team will be formed keeping Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah as the core members. It is understood that most of the names feature in the team are those who were in the recent Bangladesh ODI team and that the selection panel has been in discussion over at least two options for the World Cup squad. Now with the option to make changes until May, the selection panel are surely to try options in Ireland.

It is likely that the team will carry its full squad to Ireland but initially play in mix of the 17 cricketers in order to observe a few of the players. Another reason for the mix is to avoid burning the key players in the 75-day tour of Europe. Bangladesh will play at least four matches in the tri-nation series, followed by at least nine games in the World Cup.
