Basher informed concern over the pace attack has already been discussed with former South Africa paceman Langeveldt

Preparing spin friendly pitches and unleash an all-spinning attack may bring some success in the home Tests for Bangladesh but that created a huge backlash on their pace bowling department. The impact was evident as the Tigers’ pacers struggles haplessly in the Test matches away from home when they were endowed the chief responsibility of attack.

Bangladesh so far in the year have played all their games away from home and most of the pitches in New Zealand, Ireland and England were pace friendly decks. And there has been hardly an occasion where the pacers were seen backing the team well. In the World Cup Bangladesh had finished as one the worst bowling sides in the first power-play (first 10 overs of the game).

The eight matches Bangladesh played in the 10-nation tournament, only twice when a pacer took a wicket with the new ball during the first power-play of the game for Bangladesh. More than the pace, or the lack of it, inability to swing the ball has made Bangladesh pacers ineffective with the new ball, a task that new pace bowling consultant Charl Langeveldt will immediately need to look into.

Former Bangladesh captain and member of the national selection panel Habibul Bashar cited concern on the issue. Basher informed concern over the pace attack has already been discussed with former South Africa paceman Langeveldt.

“We need to think of our pace attack separately. We already know that our pace department needs to perform if we want to win matches away from home,” said Bashar to the reporters at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Monday.

“At home the spinners do the chief job but we need the pacers when we play away. He [Langeveldt] is aware of that and we discussed of the plans going ahead. He is excited with the job and he wants to see all the pacers, even those who are involved in the HP [BCB High Performance squad] team. He wants to be well informed with the promising bowlers in HP as they will be involved in national team training when they are free from HP team,” said Bashar.

Preparation should start at home and right-arm pacer Shafiul Islam emphasised on the need that has been well know to the concerned – of having pace friendly wickets – at least in domestic competitions.

“Of course we should try to practice on wickets [seaming] that are likely to be when we play away from home. That way it doesn’t help only us [pacers] but also the batsmen to prepare well,” said Shafiul.

“I believe we should get green tops to play at least some matches at home if not all. The only time we find pace friendly wickets is when we travel abroad. But it is not in our hands. We are now practicing on good wickets and should be ready to play under any condition,” the 29-year-old added.
