Top order batsman cum leg-spinner Aminul Islam Biplob may be the answer to Bangladesh’s desperate search of an affective leg-spinner, believes member of the national selection panel Habibul Bashar.

Bangladesh Cricket Board on Monday declared a 15-member squad for the 3rd and 4th T20I of the ongoing Tri-Nation series involving Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.

Bangladesh are second in the table after losing to Afghanistan on Sunday evening by 25 runs. BCB removed four players and accommodated five including Aminul in the squad for the tournament on Monday.

Aminul came into the Bangladesh national pipeline playing as a batsman in Bangladesh u19 but was highlighted as a leg-spinner in the BCB High Performance team.

Aminul’s leg-spin in the HP team practice sessions had caught attention of the team management and eventually by the national selectors.

Aminul was part of the BCB XI side against Zimbabwe in the 20-over warm-up game last week. He had bowled four overs and remained wicket-less conceding 37 runs.

“It has been long that we have been looking for a leg-spinner for the national team. We all are feeling the absence of a leg-spinner in the squad. We had tried with a few options over time. Aminul Islam Biplob had come in as a batsman in HP team but later we found out that he does leg-spin well,” said BCB national selector Bashar to the media on Monday.

“Our coach has been looking for a leg-spinner so we gave Aminul as the option. He is a batsman but he has been included in the [national] team as a leg-spinner and we actually want to see how affective he is as a leg-spinner,” the former Bangladesh captain added.

Aminul has played 19 List A matches till day having bowled in seven innings and bagged three wickets. With the bat the right-hander averages 30.29 in List A.

Bangladesh national team recently has included many players in the squad but left them out of it without giving any chance.

Right-arm pacer Abu Jayed is one of them. The 26-year-old was part of the Bangladesh squad in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 but had remained as a tourist returning home without playing a game.

Only time will say if Aminul’s fate will be the same but Habibul clearing the selectors’ stance on this said, “The team management actually decides the playing XI.

The players that have been selected by us are all capable to be part of the playing eleven. Our job is to give the team management enough option to form a balanced playing XI.”

Bangladesh’s previous leg-spin bowling option had come in Jubair Hossain. However the 24-year-old from Jamalpur could survive only six Tests and three ODIs in the Bangladesh dressing after his effectiveness came into doubt.

Jubair played his last international in July 2015 and has been since struggling to find a team even in the domestic circuit.
