Mominul: Problem not technique, but mentality

The two-match Test series served as Bangladesh’s introduction to the World Test Championship, and the Tigers lost both matches by innings margins

The Tigers’ batting failed in the Test series against India not due to problems of technique, but because of mentality, said Bangladesh stand-in skipper Mominul Haque Sunday.

The two-match Test series served as Bangladesh’s introduction to the World Test Championship, and the Tigers lost both matches by innings margins. Bangladesh lost the first match in Indore by an innings and 130 runs, and the second match in Kolkata by an innings and 46 runs.

In four innings across the two Tests, the Bangladesh batsmen managed to cross 200 on only one occasion. Bangladesh scored 150 and 213 in the first Test, and 106 and 195 in the second Test, as all the batsmen struggled against an in-form Indian pace attack.

Mushfiqur Rahim was the only Bangladeshi batsman to score half-century, as he put up 64 off 150 balls in the second innings of the first match, and 74 off 96 deliveries in the second innings of the second match.

Addressing a post-match press conference at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Mominul said: “I do not think there was a problem with [the Bangladesh batsmen’s] technique. There is always the scope to improve technically and tactically, but we must improve our mentality to keep fighting.

“We were not able to play as a team. The bowling was okay, but our batting was not good. We have many areas to improve, and we have quite a few Test matches in the next year. Hopefully, we will improve out performances,” he added.

“There is no reason to give excuses as a professional player. I am not going to give any excuses after such a performance. As I said, we did not perform as a team. We did not even make any partnerships out there. Musfiq Bhai [Mushfur Rahim] and Riyad Bhai [Mahmudullah] made a partnership yesterday. If we could have made more such partnerships in the series, then we could have challenged the oppositions. We batted very badly,” Mominul further said.

Mominul, who has played 38 Test matches so far, was expected to lead the batting lineup from the front as senior players Tamim Iqbal and Shakib al Hasan were absent. The stand-in skipper scored 37 and 7 in the two innings of the first test, and a pair of ducks in the second Test.

When asked about his batting performance, Mominul said: “I am not thinking too much about my own batting average. I am a bit frustrated with the team result. Obviously, such results are frustrating. I may be struggling as a batsman now, but I believe I will get better in the near future by overcoming this struggle.

“We don’t play Test matches too often. We have almost 10 Test matches next year. When we play Test matches more regularly, hopefully we will overcome this. There are many things to learn for the batsmen from this series, such as how to prepare for and play against quality bowlers. I think we will take lessons from the series as a team, and it will help us in the next series,” he added.
