With the tournament set to start on Wednesday, the teams are completing last minute preparations and New Zealand born O’Donnell is happy with how Mustafiz has performed in the nets so far
Left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman has not been in the best of form recently. The Bangladesh pacer had a tough outing in the T20I series against India last month, bowling with an economy rate of 9.51. As a result, the Bangladesh bowler was later kept on the bench for the two-match Test series against the same opponents.
Despite his form, the Rangpur Rangers have full faith in Mustafizur’s ability, said the side’s coach Mark O’Donnell.
With the tournament set to start on Wednesday, the teams are completing last minute preparations and New Zealand born O’Donnell is happy with how Mustafiz has performed in the nets so far.
“He [Mustafiz] bowled for around two hours [Monday]. He was impressive. He is vastly experienced in T20s and knows when to do what,” O’Donnell told the media at the Academy Ground of Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium Monday.
Over the past years, Bangladesh have come a long way in cricket, especially in limited overs formats. However, challenges with infrastructure remains and the majority of teams competing in domestic tournaments are cramped for space in practice facilities. The BCB Academy Ground is often the only option.
The upcoming BBPL will be O’Donnell’s first experience with the tournament. He is fine with the hectic schedule, which is similar to many of the T20 leagues around the world, but practicing on one field has been unique.
“This is my first time in Bangladesh. It is a tight schedule and there are six [seven] teams practicing on the same ground. I have a good variation in my team with a leg-spinner and Mustafizur. I believe we will be able to put up a balanced eleven,” said O’Donnell.
“Six teams [practicing in the same facility] and the crowd, it’s a bit scary. You do not know who gets hit by the ball. I have never seen anything like this. So many teams practicing in such a small area,” the Rangpur Rangers coach added.
Rangpur Rangers will begin their BBPL 2019-20 campaign by taking on Cumilla Warriors in the second game of the opening day on Wednesday.
