Wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim has come back into the fold having missed the previous game after opting to pull out from tour of Pakistan.

Experienced all-rounder Mahmudullah has been put off as Bangladesh Cricket Board declared a 16-member squad for the lone Test against visitors Zimbabwe starting February 22 at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

BCB on Sunday declared the squad with Mominul Haque as the captain and with four changes from last Bangladesh squad that played against Pakistan in Rawalpindi last week. Soumya Sarkar, pacer Rubel Hossain and pacer Al Amin Hossain are the other three to have missed a berth in the team.

Wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim has come back into the fold having missed the previous game after opting to pull out from tour of Pakistan. Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed also found their way back into the team along with two uncapped players- batsman Yasir Ali Chowdhury and pacer Hasan Mahmud.

Mahmudullah’s future in Test came in jeopardy following his below par performance in Rawalpindi Test. It was widely reported that Bangladesh national think tank following the game were in opinion that the 35-year-old cricketer should retire from the longer version and put focus on ODIs and T20Is.

Mahmudullah however, rejected the advice of retirement from Test and had informed that national selection panel of him being fine if he is dropped based on performance.

Mahmudullah since his debut in Test 2009 has played 49 Test for Bangladesh and has amassed 2764 runs under his belt with four centuries, of which three have come in 2018-19, and 16 half centuries.

However, in his last 10 innings in the format, Mahmudullah has only one half century, an innings of 67 against New Zealand at Wellington in March 2019.

Chief of the national selection panel Minhajul Abedin however, said that the omission of Mahmudullah from Zimbabwe Test was simply to give the cricketer some rest and that the selection panel is in opinion to try fresh names given the game is a at home.

“No, no, it’s not that [he has not been dropped]. We thought as a senior player he should rest in this game and it is being played at home and we wanted to try some new players. We had taken some new players in Pakistan. There are players who have played two Tests, some have played five. So we thought about giving those players some match experience,” explain Minhajul to the media at SBNS on Sunday.

BCB policymakers have very recently are in the strong opinion of having different set of players for different formats of the game. Mustafizur was another cricketer that was slated as ‘limited-over specialist’ by national team decision makers recently and was kept off from Test in Pakistan. With inclusion of the left-arm pacer against Zimbabwe, Minhajul passed the decision of having Mustafizur as white-ball specialist on shoulders of head coach Russell Domingo.

“It was [decision to not have Mustafizur in Pakistan Test] not a decision from the selectors. Coach [Domingo] had thought of that but we though he [Mustafizur] played well in BCL [Bangladesh Cricket League]. We are in strong opinion that he must be included in red ball cricket. We had a decision on this today [Sunday] morning,” informed former Bangladesh captain Minhajul.
