Tigers will not miss Shakib, believes Mominul

Shakib chose not to be a part of the series for Bangladesh that involves matches of the ICC Test Championship

Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque is confident of the team having no affect on missing out ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan in the upcoming two-match Test series against hosts Sri Lanka.

Shakib chose not to be a part of the series for Bangladesh that involves matches of the ICC Test Championship and rather play in the ongoing edition of the India Premier League T20 for Kolkata Knight Riders.

Bangladesh will also miss left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who is taking part in the IPL T20 for Rajasthan Royals, in the series. There is however claim from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that Mustafizur was issued NOC (No Objection Certificate) as the national selection panel thought to not keep the bowler as part of the squad for tour of Sri Lanka.

A 21-member Bangladesh preliminary squad is scheduled to depart for Colombo on Monday.

“I do not think it is that we (team) will not get a result if Shakib bhai or Mustafiz are not part of the team. There are other players in the team. It is not that they (Shakib and Mustafiz) have 10 or 12 hands. I don’t think their absence will have any effect on the team,” said Mominul in the pre-tour press conference to the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Sunday.

Bangladesh team has recently been below par in terms of performance. The side recently conceded whitewash in tour of New Zealand in both ODI and T20I series and earlier registered defeats in Test series against West Indies at home.

Mominul cited the results are output of failing to play as a unit.

“It might be that we are not playing as a unit. This is the main reason we are not getting the results. There is nothing else I think,” said Mominul.

The Bangladesh cricketers have been able to train as a unit only one day, on Sunday, before taking the flight to the island nation. Cricketers that were part of the New Zealand tour returned on April 4 and the upsurge in Covid-19 situation in the country did not allow the cricketers to camp as a unit. The cricketers were allowed in the practice facilities at SBNS only to train individually.

“I will not say that we had the best of the preparation. Those who got to play a couple of the National Cricket League matches have got to practice a bit. Those who have been busy with white-ball cricket recently (with tour of New Zealand) have been playing cricket for a long time now and they know what to do going ahead to the series,” said Mominul.

“We have to be ready mentally. Due to the Covid-19 situation, you might not get enough to train but do the necessity,” the left-handed batsman added.

Bangladesh will fly out from Dhaka on Monday afternoon through a Bangladesh Airlines chartered flight to Colombo. The visitors upon reaching Sri Lanka will first be in a three-day room quarantine and then allowed into the practice facilities. The Bangladesh squad is scheduled to play an inter-squad two-day game on April 17 and 18. The first Test will begin on April 21 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The second Test will also be played at the same venue starting on April 29.
