Hosts Bangladesh had secured the series winning the first three games. They lost the fourth but made an astonishing comeback in the last game to crush the mighty Aussies. At the same time Shakib emerged as the first cricketer to score 1000 runs and pick 100 wickets in T20 international.

Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan is elated as the team finished on 4-1 in the five-match T20I series against Australia and also for being able to achieve yet another feat in his long career.

Bangladesh registered a humbling 60-run victory over Australia in the fifth and the final game of the series at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Monday. Chasing 123 runs, Australia were restricted to 62, their lowest total in the format, inside 14 overs.

Shakib already had 1707 runs ahead of the game and was only two wickets away from the hundred wickets. The left-arm spinner first removed Australia wicket-keeper batsman Matthew Wade in the eighth other and then in the 12th reached the record by dismissing Ashton Turner.

Shakib finished with four wickets in the game conceding nine runs in 3.4 overs as Australia got bundled out meekly. Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi is the closest to Shakib’s record with 1416 runs and 98 wickets.

“Of course it is a good feeling whenever there are such achievements [of scoring 100o runs and picking 100 wickets in T20I]. It inspires you to play better for the team. But this feat would never have been possible without the support of the team-mates and management that I have played with so far. I have also been backed well by the supporters. That was important. I am really happy and I believe I will try to contribute for the team for many days to come,” said Shakib to the media following the game at SBNS on Monday.

“Of course we are happy but it was possible to score 10 or 15 more runs in every game. There were situations where it could have been possible. But you also need to admit that the wickets were difficult to bat on for new batsmen. There is not much to say about the batting unit and it is not right to judge anyone through only one series. The condition was tough for the batters. Overall our bowling went really well. I think the consistency we had with the ball in the five games, being able to hold to that we will do well in the world cup,” said Shakib who finished as the Man of the Match and was also adjudged as the Man of the Series for his 114 runs and seven wickets from five games.

Shakib believes the wins against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe, against Australia and the series next against New Zealand at home will help Bangladesh building to the ICC T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in October-November this year.

There is argument on the wickets that the series was played on – which kept low, slow and turning – something that will not be similar at the two host countries for the world event, UAE and Oman. But Shakib believes the winnings will work as a tonic in the dressing room.

“You might not get the confidence looking at the scorecard but winning the series against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe then winning against Australia 4-1 then we are to play New Zealand. These will surely boost us going into the World Cup. I think we are getting a good preparation. The batsmen might not be able to score much runs as we are playing on a slow, low, turning wickets but in the end the winning is above everything. This gives confidence in the dressing and creates a winning mentality,” Shakib explained.

Bangladesh played the series without its regular players in shape of Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das.

Opener Tamim missed out of the series due to a knee injury while wicket-keeper batsmen Mushfiq and Liton could not take part for not being able to comply with the COvid-19 safety protocols that were set for the series.

Shakib believes the regulars missing out will help the team understand their strength and also create a healthy competition in the dressing room.

“It is a positive for us that we have won the series despite not having few of our regular players. This will of course create a belief in the team. The team strength is increase a lot after they come back to the team. This will make the team think competitive. There will be a healthy competition which is needed to develop as a big team,” said the Bangladesh all-rounder.
