Bangladesh one-day international captain Tamim Iqbal returned to the field on Sunday following a long break due to his knee injury. The left-handed batsman was seen spending some time hitting the ball on the center wicket at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

The practice facilities at Mirpur are often found busy with national team cricketers working on their skills with upcoming ICC T20 World Cup approaching near. Tamim however, has come with a different aim.

The veteran Bangladesh batsman is preparing for the Everest Premier League set to start in Kathmandu later this month.

The knee injury saw Tamim return home without playing the T20 series against Zimbabwe in July. The swashbuckling opener later rested during the two home series, against Australia and New Zealand too. Tamim was expected to recover before the World Cup and the national selection panel was clear about naming Tamim in the squad for the T20 World Cup.

Tamim however, in a shocking announcement on September 1 said he will not be available for the upcoming world event set to take place in UAE and Oman from October 17 to November 15.

The left-handed batsman cited under preparation due to long knee injury and that he did not want to take the place of openers who have been playing in the format more regularly than him in recent times as reasons for his drastic decision.

Tamim while recovering from the injury could work only on his fitness. On Sunday, Tamim entered the center wicket with net bowlers, throwers and coach Humayun Kabir. The Bangladesh ODI captain is scheduled to depart for Nepal on September 25 and play for Bhairahawa Gladiators in the six-team tournament.

Tamim’s visit to Nepal is now simply part of his commitment with the team. The Bangladesh cricketer had planned to play in the tournament as a part of preparation before heading to the World Cup in the middle-east.

The T20 league in Nepal this year has aimed to turn grand with the teams roping in big name international cricketers. Pakistan legend Shahid Afridi, England’s Liam Plunkett, West Indies cricketers Chris Gayle, Dwayne Smith and Kesrick Williams are likely to be part of the tournament this season. Sri Lanka batsmen Upul Tharanga is likely to play alongside Tamim for Bhairahawa Gladiators.
