European Transfer: Galatasaray plotting Turan signing, Kranevitter leaves Atletico for Zenit
Galatasaray are trying to bring out-of-favour Barcelona forward Arda Turan back to the Turkish club, president Dursun Ozbek said on Tuesday. Arda, who made his professional debut for Galatasaray in 2004 and stayed at the club until joining Atletico Madrid in 2011, was an unused substitute in Barca's 5-0 friendly win over Chapecoense on Monday, even though coach Ernesto Valverde made 11 changes. His exclusion has been reported in the Spanish media as a sign the Turk does not feature in Valverde's plans for the season and that he is on his way out of Barca. "Arda is a Galatasaray fan, he really loves the club and he is going to play for us again," Ozbek told a news conference on Tuesday.
"His only chance of playing in Turkey is here, and we hope he ends up seeing out his career at Galatasaray. We are working on his transfer."
Arda has scored 15 goals in 55 appearances for Barca but has failed to hold down a first team place since switching from Atletico in 2015 for 34m euros. He made 14 league starts last season. His progress in his first campaign was stunted because he was banned from playing the first half of the 2014/15 season by the club's existing transfer ban. Galatasaray are Turkey's most successful club with 20 league titles, but they finished fourth in the top flight last season, 13 points behind champion Besiktas. Kranevitter agrees four-year deal with Zenit Argentine midfielder Matias Kranevitter has joined Zenit St Petersburg from Atletico on a four-year deal, the Russian club announced on Tuesday. The 24-year-old ended last season on loan to Seville but made his name at River Plate, where he won the Argentine league and the Copa Libertadores. Kranevitter, who has eight international caps, is the fourth Argentine to join the Russian club this close season, following the signings of Leandro Paredes, Emanuel Mammana and Sebastian Driussi. Southampton recruit Juventus' Lemina Southampton have paid a club-record transfer fee to land Gabon midfielder Mario Lemina from Juventus on a five-year contract, the Premier League club said on Tuesday. Juve confirmed in a statement on their official website the deal was worth an initial 17m euros ($19.98m), which could increase by a further three million euros. The 23-year-old Lemina won the Serie A title and the Italian Cup twice with the Turin club and featured in last season’s Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid. "I think that it was the project that attracted me the most and the one my family was really behind. I am really happy to be here," Lemina told the club website (https://southamptonfc.com) Saints' previous record signing was Morocco midfielder Sofiane Boufal, who joined the south-coast club from French side Lille in August 2016. Lemina's arrival is a boost for Southampton supporters after Netherlands centre back Virgil van Dijk said on Monday he had handed in a transfer request and expressed disappointment at the south-coast club's refusal to listen to offers for him. Lemina is the club's second signing in the transfer window after Polish centre half Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan.
"Mario is an outstanding talent who has already achieved a great deal in his career, winning a number of titles and gaining experience of playing on some of the biggest stages in world football," said Southampton Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed.
"Investing in a player of Mario’s quality and buying from a club like Juventus is a significant statement of intent from the club, and this is a purchase that has set another club-record fee. "Mario will complement what is already an extremely strong group of midfield players in our squad, and we are excited about what he will bring to the group.” Leicester buy Welsh forward Thomas Leicester City have signed forward George Thomas from League Two side Coventry City for an undisclosed fee, the Premier League club said on Tuesday. The 20-year-old, who has represented Wales at youth level, scored nine goals in 36 appearances for Coventry last season, including the winner in April's EFL Trophy final against Oxford United. Leicester-born Thomas came through the ranks at Coventry before making his debut as a 16-year-old against Leyton Orient in January 2014. Coventry and Leicester agreed a fee after Thomas, whose contract expired in June, rejected fresh terms. "We are disappointed George has come to this decision," Coventry manager Mark Robins told the club website (www.ccfc.co.uk). "He is a fantastic lad and everyone associated with Coventry City wish him all the very best. Hopefully our paths can cross again at some point in the future." Brazilian striker Richarlison joins Watford Brazilian striker Richarlison has signed a five-year deal with Watford, the Premier League club confirmed on Tuesday. The 20-year-old joins from Brazilian club Fluminense for whom he scored 19 times in 67 games. "The Hornets have beaten off strong competition to secure the services of the highly-rated 20-year-old, following a successful work permit application," Watford said on their website. It has been a busy summer for Watford who also signed English midfielders Tom Cleverley and Will Hughes from Everton and Derby County respectively and defender Nathaniel Chalobah from Chelsea. Marco Silva's side kick off their campaign against Liverpool on Saturday.
