Bangladesh U-16 ends AFC qualifiers with a win over Qatar
The Bangladesh U-16 national football team ended the AFC Under-16 championship first round qualifiers with a victory. The red and green became group runners-up by beating the host nation Qatar 2-0. In the Group E clash on Sunday evening, the Red and Greens played a commanding game. Qatar made five changes to the team after losing 6-1 to Yemen, while Bangladesh started with the same lineup that had lost 2-0 to the same opponents. The U-16 boys mounted the pressure on the opposition from the very beginning of the game. Bangladesh had an opportunity to score in the first half when Miraj Molla was released on the left after a long clearance from Yeasin Arafat. The forward did well to beat his marker Abdulrahman Al Basti for pace, but his heavy touch allowed keeper Yousef Balideh to come off his line and collect the ball. Both goals came in the second half on Sunday night. Despite the attacks and the counter-attacks, no teams managed to score in the first-half. But in the second half, Bangladesh opened up the scoreboard. Deepak Roy redeemed himself for the earlier misses by rising above a crowd of Qatari defenders to head home a corner from the right by Molla in the 70th minute. On the 82nd minute, attacking midfielder Foysal Ahmed Fahim scored the second goal beating Qatari goalie Balideh with a low shot from outside the box and confirmed 3 points for Bangladesh. Yemen is the group E champion with two wins. And with one win and three points, Bangladesh is the group runner-up. Group E became a 3-team group as fourth country United Arab Emirates (UAE) failed to show up in Qatar to compete in the tournament. From ten groups, the group champions and the six best runners-up will participate in the main tournament in 2018. Bangladesh will now have to wait and see if they can be among those 6 teams and have a chance of appearing at the AFC main competition next year.
