The sudden departure of Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited's Nigerian head coach Joseph Afusi created drama between the team and the tactician. The club stated that the coach has been missing since Tuesday morning while Afusi claimed he resigned from the team before leaving Bangladesh.
The curiosity arose when Afusi was absent from the Sheikh Jamal dug-out during their first match of the second phase of the Bangladesh Premier League against Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited Tuesday afternoon. Goalkeeping coach Mosharraf Hossain Khan Badal guided the team in Afusi's absence.
Sheikh Jamal's football committee chairman Ashrafuddin Ahmed Chunnu informed that they knew nothing regarding the absence of Afusi prior to the game. He told after the match, "I came to know in the morning that Afusi was missing. He was with the club till [Monday] and also held a meeting with us. We are looking for him but his phone is unreachable."
Afusi however, was found active on facebook. The 35-year old coach informed that he sent the resignation letter to the email addresses of both the club and the chairman before leaving Bangladesh. He said, "I have duly notified the management about my resignation and the reason is personal."
This is the third time Afusi and Sheikh Jamal have parted ways but this time around, different circumstances have been cited. Afusi first joined the club as player-cum-coach in 2012 and was the head coach till 2014 before joining the club again in 2015. He was sacked by the club on both occasions. He then joined Indian-League side Churchill Brothers. He joined Sheikh Jamal again at the start of this season but this time, according to his claim, he resigned from the club.
